One might as well just take that approach to its logical extreme and close one's eyes altogether. Then just imagine a model painted to whatever standard you desire.

If your eyes are closed you could save vast amounts of money and just not buy the minis at all and just imagine army after army of beautifully painted and converted models. Of course from a wargaming perspective you'd need to find someone equally delusional, but then thats what the internet is for!

That's called boardgaming.  I do that too.

I tend to get inspired.  That can be expensive, not sure if I can recomended it too highly.

Best not to set your own standards too high though.  Can be more offputting than helpful.  I have found that my standards as well as the time I am prepared to spend painting have decreased.  Luckilly I have spent lots of time reading up on speed painting which has allowed me to get better results for less effort than I used to.  Now a model might take me 17 minutes (for a 28mm infantry model) and look better than something I spent hours on 5 years ago.

Drybrushing, washing and other "speed" techniques are definitely my friends.

I tend to be the opposite. If I see something I like or that works better than what I'm doing I try to reverse engineer how it was done and then enhance it. I also try to set higher standards for myself to see just how far I can really push things.

I am actually getting worse :(

Me too. Although the bonus of getting old is that even if your painting ability gets worse, your eyesight goes faster!
