Is each individual window a seperate insert?

Inserts seem like a clever way of a letting people choose their own windows to be open or close and spare epic gothic windows have to have lots of uses in other building projects.

That'd require up to 100 pieces to provide insets for a whole building, clearly not practical.

Yeah, each individual window is a separate piece (which maybe too thin at the moment). I made sure all the brick work on the back side is clear of the insert footprint, and left some gaps for clearance so they won't be too tight. I will probably go ahead and make the backface of the inserts thicker so they will be easier to cast.

The benefits to this method are:
1) you can have buildings with only a few random windows missing.
2) it makes it far easier to make broken windows
3) window inserts not used on a ruin can be incorporated into scratch-built structure to add detail with little effort.

The downside:
more parts to cast (lots more, and small ones at that)
more parts to glue
more parts to lose and have buildings with all but one window filled in

You guys are still going to be on the hook for making the floors/roofs. There are just too many variations to cover (mainly involving inside corners vs outside corners). Cutting plasicard to fit shouldn't be too big of a deal, especially if you start with a sheet with 1/12" or 1/16" grid spacing, which can be had from Evergreen scale models.

Amazing!

The windows don't need filling. Remember that glass is transparent

So where are all the floors inside the building...

Floors canbe made the same way as roofs.

And furniture? The true dedicated will build their own....or borrow from Z gauge railway models :D

Having actual inserts is going to be *really* impractical, as I said you're talking a hundred pieces or more for each building.

Just having two versions of each wall (open or closed) is much more practical.

Well, I figure that because the inserts are flat and really only have details on two faces, making a mold of multiple inserts should be fairly trivial. That way, you wouldn't have to make them one at a time.

Also, making prototypes of 24 building pieces is significantly more expensive than making prototypes of 12 building pieces plus 8 square windows plus 8 round windows plus one double door plus one triple door. Especially if I find a mistake on a building part and have to reprint 2 versions of the part instead of just the one.

For personal use, I will probably cast a bunch of building parts, but then only have 10% of those with windows. As for needing more than 100 parts for a building, as an avid lego collector, I don't see that being so bad. They are basically pegs that fit into complimentary holes, so it's very little effort, just time.

Just the same way a Krieg infantry company models are *really* impractical because you need to stick together over a hundred pieces no?

Plasticard for floors and rooves is totally fine. You can by really nice thin plasticard with textured detail on too that you can layer on top and easily make awesome looking rooves, floors and wall on - 6mm scale rooves, brickword, cobles, textured metals and many and various surface textures and scales are available. A company called Squires Model and Craft Tools have a wide selection here in the UK (they lack a website despite having being around for years and years but they'll post you a free catalogue if you ring them). Good source or many and various modelling tools and bits and bobs too.

I was more talking impractical for him to cast, rather than impractical to put together.

Impractical enough, I suspect, that the eventual price will not be reasonable to me.

This may not be possible if you're aiming for a one sided mold.
(If you can, do. KISS and all that)

but, you mentioned having a score line on the back for people to cut down sections by floor. Could this be made say 1.5mm deep and 1.5mm wide?

Cos then you could slot floor sections into it...

It'd still be easy enough to fill where the inside is exposed and no floor is present.

Better to have a supporting ridge to stick the floor to rather than a notch in the wall to fit it in to - people could use whatever width of plasticard they have to hand then.

I windows to pricy and fiddly give out one or two and people have to press mould them themselves? Would it help if they were detailed on one side only? Or were even made of plaster linka style?

Well, for times when you are absolutely sure that you don't want to see the inside of the structure, one sided inserts certainly would be far easier to make - only a single sided mold.

Lets try that first.

Heck, I only added the rear-facing detail so people could use them as detail in the their scratch-builds.

Man it would be awesome if the 3D models were created into templates to make into paper building models

it would be nice to have some really tall buildings, epic city scapes tend to look a bit to low to the ground for me. a really big city should be TALL like chicago or new york.
