Note that it's cost me more to have Print-A-Part do work as they had to ship to the UK.

Have you been unable to come across any UK based firms, or are they all much more expensive? Sorry if you've mentioned this before, tiring day at work (stupid radar data, stupid Liberia, stupid server crash..).

I'm glad you're going for metal. I'm falling out of love with resin.. sure details might be crisper but they're often warped . And nothing is mightier than a large metal model, they always seem to do better. Metal 40k dreads = win.

Cheers for clearing the casting up Warmaster Nice :)

...my Vaygr battlecruiser.

Link please. I would absolutely love to see this.

Have you done any more HW(2) models?

Ah, OK. Have you printed any of them, or are they only 3dmodels at this stage?

No prints yet. I'm gubbinizing the main body according to the 'skin', so it will be at least another month or so.

Entirely random homeworld paper models.
http://wiki.reliccommunity.com/Paper_starships

Or perhaps not that random as they seem to have a way of 'unfolding' the ships.

And more randomly someone elses efforts.

Well i think we need a 3D-Scanner.
According to this a Webcam and a Laser is all you need. The special software for it will be available for free in the upcoming weeks:
http://www.golem.de/0610/48213.html

Only questins i if the quality is good enough.

This system is already available, the software is free but has some limitations regarding resolution. The commercial version (including also laser + camera) - which isn't too expensive - has only the camera's resolutions as the limit.

Regarding quality: you can have a look at the website, there are a lot of example - also from miniatures ...

Here'S the link: http://www.david-laserscanner.com

Here's an WH40K example model scanned: http://www.david-laserscanner.com/forum....e#p2274

If it is possible to scan small models with good results is questionable though ...

Oops just seen that my link is from 2006 :D

EDIT: Resolution fot this DAVID 3D Scanner seems good enough judging from the BlackTemplar model.

there's at least one piece of software availble for that
there's also the paper 40k template download, which i have but have yet to play with.

What is the best way to get into the CAD programs?
IE which one should you start with (pref free!)

Otter and me are using Moment of Inspiration 3D http://moi3d.com/ - unfortunately it is not free but you have a 30 day trial period. It was the first modeling tool I ever really used - the results can be seen in my Nashorn thread ...

MoI3D is - in my opinion - very easy to learn and use. It is a pure modeler and has therefore a limited set of functionality - but for this case it's more than sufficient.

I'm tempted to maybe have a little go at this CAD modelling and printing thing myself at some point, though probably not for a few months and likely just little things for myself rather than anything others would really be interested in (though perhaps eventually, who knows). I'm encouraged to see the excellent Nashorn was Nik's first go at it as I have zero experience of computer modelling myself.

Do you guys that have more experience of it reckon it could be used to print a little sprue of tiny detailed things and then these spin casted? (I have zero kit or experience casting or I might have considered resin) Is the cost based on weight or size? If the former it might not even cost too much comparatively. I have in mind a sprue of current style W40k ork weapons (with or without arms) and a sprue of space marine vehicle hatches and shoulder pads with embossed symbols for the chapter I'd like to do in epic (not one that anyone else does). These sound feasible?

For shoulders and vehicle hatches i would imagine press moulding from green stuff would be better as you don't need a 2 part mould and getting a spin casting disc made up is $$$.

I'll consider it but I can't sculpt for toffee and detail and proportions would be much better on printed ones. I'd look into and see, but if it wasn't to crazy expensive I could see myself trying it, I am a bit of a perfectionist with my models.

You could still print the part, but then reproduce it in a press/GS mould. no hand sculpting required.
