I think you’re all going in totally the wrong direction with this!

A monolith is a massive block of stone, something large and immovable, brooding. As the tend to GW have linked the name and the model and the GW Monolith model is reminiscent of this.

An obelisk is a ‘tall, narrow, four-sided, tapering monument which ends in a pyramid-like shape at the top.’ At present none of the Obelisk designs I’ve seen have tried to reflect than in the model and I think imagining a Necron vehicle through fitting with that would be the best starting point.

Something shaped vaguely like the below is sort of what I have in mind, with the top 1/3 of that shape being a Necron crystal going pretty seamless-ly into the supporting 2/3 below which would have Necron like surfaces and detail similar aesthetically to the Monolith.

Glyn: I'm aware of what an obelisk is, but i find it very hard to imagine an obelisk shaped vehicle looking any good, frankly.

I'm going to knock up a prototype, but I don't hold out much hope for it.

A Necron Monolith looks like a pyramid, not like a monolith.

I've always been of the opinion that the obelisk ought to look like an "evil lighthouse" more than a "floor tile with an engagement diamond."

But anyway, maybe, since the obelisk is smaller than a monolith, you should take your desgin cues from the destroyer body instead.

OR

Maybe try an asymetric design where one of the corner wedges/columns is taller than the other corners.

Instead of an upgringt needle it could be a lying one. I magine a Destroyer body (the engine part not the Necron-body) where a lying obelisk is placed. The crystal on its tip pointing at the target.

That's the thing, these are all perfectly valid visions of what an obelisk could be, but if I'm going to get this printed and cast it has to be a popular enough design, and that probably means sticking to the sort of design that people have done in the past, i.e. a flat monolithesque design.

Not to mention that I'm also making this for my own Necron army, so the design has to be one I like too...

I will knock up a tall design, but I'm not all that hopeful about it looking much good.

This design will not be completely symetrical once I've added all the details.

i also think a floating washington monument would look silly (although i use the monument salt and pepper shakers for my objectives)
maybe you could make the gem in the middle slightly "obelisk" shaped.

I'm thinking perhaps kind if like the solar temples of ancient egypt. This is just a couple of minutes so not refined and would probably look better if the corner pieces were smaller, but perhaps something like this:

Hmmm... the "base" of a Monolith with a taller and thinner central "spire"; that could be quite cool!

I would caution against using both a gem in the central spire and making it too tall and thin or the base will overpower the central spire and if a gem is used it will look too much like the monolith at a distance.

The reason for having a Gem is weapon consistency; the obelisk has a longer ranged version of the same particle whip weapon generated by the gem on the monolith.

I do like that "solar temple" desgin though, I may run up a test of that style.

I'm not trying to steal the thread from zombo or anything, but I am posting a more finished version of the image I put up here last night since this is a thread for the obelisk.

Got sick of doing panel lines so nothing on the outer blocks.
