Before I work myself into a lather and reply to everything (a terrifying sight) I just thought I'd ask what do people expect to see in the Titan list? Currently I find Epic being what it is activates matter and that titans have their own innate advantages. Leading to there being a benefit to having multiple titans (most terrifyingly the warhound horde) and in this list that means the lightest load outs have I think currently a slight advantage over the heavyist. The original list compensated for that by going the other way and giving a benefit to the heavyist weapons leading to a perception that the rest were fillers.

So what should a Titan legion look like? A number of multirole titans? All assault? All support? A mix of both? Should there be more scout titans than battle titans?

Imperial Armour VI gives a good indication of what a typical Titan Legion deployment may look like ; The Warp Runners deployed a battle group of 10 Reaver Titans and 12 Warhound Titans to assist the war on planet Vraks.

Legio Vulcanum deployed a similar number of Chaos Titans in opposition.

It's always been noted in past fluff that warlords are by far the most common battle titan

IA6 I think may be somewhat atypical of TL deployments . I remember reading that the Warlord is the most common titan with reavers being somewhat rare due to their more arcane technologies requiring more time to complete. The vraks campaigh understandably has a deployment of all reavers and warhounds simply because that's what FW offers right now. Should they ever do something so crazy as a warlord at 40k scale, I'm sure the next IA will include a more balanced legion or one consisting of mostly Warlords.

I agree with the above, but it does show that deployments without Warlords present do happen.

Are there any stories other than Mechanicus to indicate that the titans operate as one force? Or do they normally split up and support other fighting battle groups?

The book 'Titanicus' shows what it calls the biggest 'Engine War' since the Heresy.

Although there is a ground war going on in the area too, for the most part the Titans don't care and concentrate on attacking enemy Titans exclusively.

Also there's the Titan comics, which largely show engine-on-engine combat.

Essentially it boils down to

1) Pure titan engagements can occur (Only Titans in the list)
2) Single chassis Titan Legions exist (So all Warlord, Reaver or Emperor)
3) Warhounds don't appear in Titan forces without Battle Titans (So Warhounds limited to battle titan numbers - Now a maximum of 4 Warhounds per Battle Titan)

On the Heavy/Light build split, an additional Titan with cheap weapons will almost always be better than upgunning the other Titans. The extra titan brings more activations, another hard target, more firepower and greater table control.

It was my impression that the War Griffons were a "typical" titan legion, with the "usual" variations in hull types?

Quite so.  Which is why I suggested building in some of the weapons cost to the hulls, as it raises the amount spent on weapons over activations.  E&C's suggestion of limiting free weapons does a similar thing (in a different way).

Well, seeing as how this is the internet, the correct answer is: 'whatever I want.'

But seriously, I think that the War Griffons list ought to be mostly battle titans (by points cost) with either more battle titans to fill in the rest, or some scout titans or AM troops as minor support.

I would like to see a [separate] list that ONLY allows battle titans, but with only 3-5 activations per 3000 pts, they would have to use modified tourney objectives.

*raises hand*

Isn't the entire point of a Titan Legion list to cater to those who essentially want to fight one of those 'rare' occasions when an pure-Engine army goes to war? As of the current fluff, the Reaver is not an overtly rare sight in the Imperium, there's been nothing to contradict the prevailance of Warlords as per the old fluffpiece on them, but its not set in stone that you cannot have a Reaver Legio,

As it stands, this might be the War Griffon's list, to differentiate itsself from the original development, but overall its designed, I believe from talking to E&C, to be broadly representative of all Legio's just it features War Griffon's as the case study for the fluff - like my Chaos Titan lists take their Legios as the case study of their fluff, but are designed to represent other Legios of their gods as well...

Not to mention in a full Legio deployment your not necissarily going to see all the Titan Battle Groups in one area - Epic represents a wider battle line than W40k but it doesn't represent the sum total of a war - so fielding a single-chassis force simply represents the battle group present for this particular fight rather than the total force of the Legio.

Yes, the fielding of a full AMTL force would be notaby rare.

Far more common would be the deployment of Titans in support of other armies, be they Marines or IG, which is already represented, of course.

There were only 4 Warhounds (Legio Ignatum) deployed to the Imperial forces on Taros (IA 3).
NO Battle titans were used during the conflict so there is a precident for Warhound only deployments.

Though of course FW only made Warhounds then.

Marketing background aside how should they march to war in your head? Numerous and light, rare and heavy, what?

Yeah, but at the time of publication, FW only made warhounds in 40k scale.

Also, 3 warhounds does not a titan legion army make.

Not that I don't think it's possible that a TL would send a large force of [just] warhounds to a war zone, but seeing as how such a force have proven to be problematic in-game, I don't think we should focus on that possiblity in the War Griffon list.

Maybe the next one.
