At least partially because a couple of FW sculptors told me they weren't going to be making any Knights for Warhammer 40,000 because they "don't fit anymore".

Knights make a big appearance in the Heresy novel Mechanicus.
So as far as that goes as a reference they are still part of the heresy-era background.
