^ Exactly. And much of that was caused by the Warp storms that accompanied the birth of Slaanesh. When and how did this 'Iron Men' business get added to the background, anyway?

Or the Dark Age of technology, I forget, the fluff has been bobbing around for some time - there was a man on machine bit somewhere in the 40k background - lifted completely from Dune.

Throw in the Enslavers and other warp entities as well.

The Iron Men is something added in the last ten years or so. However go back 20 to when I first started playing and you do have Imperial robots in Epic and 40k. In both they were much less flexible than normal troops. In Epic you picked an order and the robots were on that order for the entire game, and in 40k there was a little decision map (that cost points for every step) that you constructed for your robot.

The Dark Mechanicum seem to fiddle with demon possessed AI, but robots with a level of autonomy slightly greater than we currently see in our military robots was part of the Epic/40k background.

Yes, the Iron men is a bit of a Dune/Butlerian Jihad rip off, but lots of the 40k background is borrowed from elsewhere.

The Iron Men stuff appeared in the 3rd Edition rules book. I don't know if some about it was released earlier.

Hmm, there's a recent reference to Legio Cybernetica in the Horus Heresy Collected visions on Page.93 there's an image of a maniple - on page.131 of two seperate robots one of which is clearly labled Surviele-class Robot.

Thats the most recent mention to the Imperial Robots made in the last ten years.

But nothing referenced post-heresy?

Page 328 as well (Delta Omega)

Would these classify as the 'robots' being discussed?

The only post-heresy reference I know of is the fluff for the Desert Lions chapter kept a robot maniple of respect to their service- assumedly to the present timeline. Kind of old fluff, though, sourced from an old white dwarf I believe. EDIT: White Dwarf 104, 1988, Imperial Robots, reprinted in Warhammer 40,000: Compendium. 21 years old, make of that what you will ;-)

"Operation Carthage (the Second Pacification of Isstvan V)
During the campaign to retake Isstvan V, the detachment of the Desert Lions was accompanied by an attached cohort of Legio Cybernetica robots. The chapter's attack on the planet's defence forts was preceded by the cohort, which had been programmed to advance on the defences in an apparently mindless fashion. Easily destroyed by the defenders, they succeeded in mapping out the defenders' fire-plans and blind spots. When the Desert Lions launched their attack only seven Marines were lost. All surviving robots of the cohort were inducted into the chapter as honorary members as a mark of respect.

But nothing referenced post-heresy?

Not to my knowledge, but then, by that vein there's no evidence for Knights post-heresy.

Thus my resistance to adopting actual 'Paladin' Knights into the AMTL army list.

Does the fluff from Titan Legions not count?

It is ambiguous, at best.

Anyways, the Praetorian stats are designed to also be used as Robots if you prefer, so this whole debate has been moot. :)

I don't understand how it's ambiguous. Per Titan Legions Knights clearly exist in the 40k universe.

It's kinda like the Squat situation during 40k's third edition ; they might techically still exist in the background, but noone's talked about them in ten years. :)

I won't argue that, but if they haven't been talked about in 10 years why wouldn't go with the most recent information?
