At the price, there is almost no excuse to pick up an Iron Dwarves fleet as a secondary to lure people in ;-)

I just started to paint my fleet, after it arrived in the mail on Friday and I had two excellent beginners games on Saturday!
I have just basecoated and washed the rest of the fleet, Orcus are still unpainted (although I converted  pod into Narwals using toothpicks so i know which are which)

The ink is still drying on the sail here and the flash blew the whites out a bit, making the glowing ship effect look a bit glowier than it is painted ;-)

The downward spiral continues. I found the Dragon Lords starter fleet at reduced price.... sonow I have theDragon Lord battleship class,2 cruiser class and 6 frigate class ships horribly outnumbering my three Dwarf vessels.

Well, you know what that means, don't you? Why you need more dwarf ships, of course.  :vD

Sigh. This means I'm lost, right ?

Tas, I hear you - they ARE rather splendid, and perfect for VSF.

Great.  Now I have this hard to ignore voice in my head:
"You WANT them...you NEED them..."
Of course, my 1/1200 ACW Ironclad fleets are exactly the wrong scale for this and would need replacing too!  :glare:

And they're big beasties too.
Imagine Tas - dwarf ships for the Union, Shadow Mages for the Confederacy; with a small assortment of sailing ships to make up the numbers and allow for less modern vessels.
And on land - for the North - great armoured vehicles on wheels with turrets; for the South - something like the CSS Virginia on wheels! Not original, I'm afraid, it's been used in the ABC Warriors. But it would still be a grand sight...

So what starter fleets do you guys recommend?
I managed to narrow it down to my top 6 but am finding it harder to refine it any further!
As a minimum I'm thinking Iron Dwarves, Shroud Mages, Orks and Bone Griffons

Top 6?! As far as I know there's 7 fleets so far! Get them all!
Good grief, you're worse than me!
Well, if you want to go for VSF-usable stuff thew dwarves and mages are an obvious choice. I've resisted the Griffons and Orcs so far, but they have their potential - and they also look fun to paint. My only full size fleet so far is the Dragon Lords - because my wife liked the look of them, and also because they have a slightly oriental feel - they do not look like junks or Korean or Japanese warships or anything, still...  that's how I see them. And I'm thinking of applying a few Chinese characters or hexagrams on.

I didn't much like the Imperial fleet mainly because of the clumsy-looking ropework on the masts; and the elves look like a modern regatta rather than a fantasy fleet - never went for the trimaran or catamaran look in fantasy. The battleship and cruiser designs are not all bad, with their lateen sails, but the essential escorts don't work for me.
