Quote (CyberShadow @ 29 2003 Oct.,14:42) | Thanks for the comments guys. I really dont want to encourage any kind of Dualing Diaries, as I know very well who would come off worse! This is more of a project with reports to make sure that I keep going. Anyone else want to do this? We could create a whole new board for painting and force assembly reports and such...
A question, in the previous background, I have the battle units called divisions. Now, I realise that a division is normally a much larger unit of troops, but I cant think of anything better that is not detachment or formation. Does anyone have any idea about what this kind of scale of battle unit is called? | I would love to take part, however, I still dont have a digital camera. (bloody ebay and the stupid bidders willing to pay anything).
If I do manage to lend/steal one from a friend, I would gladly contribute an article on the production of an Ork force.
I did get out my stuff last night, and start going through things. I opened two blisters of buggies and glued them together. I fancy a large unit of these - 10 + scorchers.
Anyway, when I've mucked around with EpicA, whirwinds did nothing impressive for me. And would you need a hunter for air support in 2000pts?
I think Devastator units are a must. They kick out a decent amount of firepower, and can get into the ruins/buildings.
As for a name for the battleforce? Erm, I dont know what they're really called. What about a strike force? (off the top of my head)

I'm fairly sure Assault Marines are (or will be) dropped to 175.
You have a very firepower-heavy force. Marines are good at that, but they excel at assaults. I would recommend dropping one or two of the fire support formations.
My personal preferences would be:
Keep the Whirlwinds and Tacs in Razorbacks for fire support. I like the WW for long range and indirect fire, and the Razorbacks for volume of fire and the size of the formation (which can also provide an effective assault if needed).
Drop the Tornado upgrades on the speeders. This will give you some MW attacks, as well as a more assault-oriented force. You are lacking AT fire, so I think this is important.
Drop the Preds. You have enough fire support.
Pick up another tac formation. I think they are one of the best all-around formations in the game. Relatively cheap and good at everything.
Pick up 2 commanders. With the 50 from downgrading the tornadoes, the 25 from the assault price difference, and the 25 left over, that should put you at exactly 2K. I would recommend a chaplain and a captain with your tac formations. A supreme commander could also be an option (instead of 2).
A bit of free advice. Just remember you get what you pay for.

List ThreeTactical + Razorback (x6) + Chaplain : 500
Tactical + Captain : 350
Tactical : 300
Land Speeder : 200
Predators : 300
Assault + Librarian : 250 or 225
Total : 1900 or 1875As you can see, all the lists are quite similar (basically all that has changed are the Whirlwinds). List three (currently my favourite) still has at least 100 points to spend. I considered a Hunter (or even a Vindicator) added. The Hunter is fairly powerful, even at ground targets, although it is very expensive for this. But, I will need one eventually anyway.
I did downgrade the Land Speeders as suggested, and added a third Tactical, and the Whirlwids are not so impressive, especially as I will need to keep something else back to protect them as well, which is not a great idea in such a small force. I also cant see the advantage of Devastators over Tactical Marines. For the same cost, you get two less stands, and one less transport. This makes a potential six extra blasts that a Tactical can take, as well as the flexibility of having the units seperated, meaning a stand lost reduces the effectiveness of the unit less. And as a trade off, I just lose two heavy weapon shots.
I have stuck with both the Razorbacks and the Predators as these are great minis (Epic40K edition anyway) and have always been signatures of my Marine force. Besides, the Predator in Epic:A has some nice stats to it!
I want something fast and hard hitting, but there does not seem to be anything particularly powerful in the force. I would like to take a Dreadnought, but I cant justify the loss of mobility that this means. Does anyone take them, and why?
And Jimbo, I suspected that this was the reason. I will break out the paint brushes as soon as I get the time, and keep you all updated, although dont expect Tuff's speed painting!

You're doing a good job CS. Not everyone is lucky enough to have the time to spare that I do to devote to the hobby and thats probably a good thing overall!
I look forward to seeing your first units roll off the production line - dont rush them whatever you do! You dont need loads of stuff for the game, I just might have a few more options to suprise my opponent with than you can muster
Quote (CyberShadow @ 03 2003 Nov.,17:50) | Sorry for the slow progress. Hopefully things will pick up. And Tuff, just how much time do you spend each day painting? |
It varies a lot. During University holidays I'm far more busy & have far less time to paint. But in term time, there's nothing much happening around here - all my mates dissapear all over the country. Wednesdays I go on mini-pub crawls with a friend who's on a gap year (We're determined to have tried every pub in the county by the time everyone else returns from uni), Thursdays I usually go to help at the Venture scout (15-18's) unit which is a good laugh.
Other than that my evenings are clear. Obviously I do go out randomly & do stuff with the few (3 + Ventures, but they seem younger every year!) people around, but in the 8 days for the start of the project, I pretty much sacrificed the social life to make sure I got a good start & didnt get bogged down.
Doing gardening 3 days a week, my boss picks me up, but the time varies. I'm ready for 8:30, but often wont get picked up until 10am depending on whether his alarm goes off or if he simply cant be bothered. I paint & go online whilst I wait. I'll get in from work at 5:30 - 6:30 ("company drinks" alowing....), shower & start painting/surfing. Even if I go out that normally gives me 2 Hours minimum. Last week I literally ate dinner whilst I painted (funnily enough I'm chewing whilt I type - Why waste time when life is short?) to reach my targets (sad, isnt it?).
Days when I'm not gardening, I paint commissions/stuff to sell, from 9-5. If I'm going out, that gives me 2/3 hours to do my own stuff before hand.
I Normally go to bed about 1am, so often also get an hour painting in AFTER a pub trip.
So, short answer, scary as it is even to myself having figured it out, I guess I do about 2 hours average on a day where I work & go out. 5/6 hours if I dont go out!
Its all down to dedication generally to never waste a moment... and being slightly mad helps too.... ? ? I couldnt do it without my large workspace. I always have a multitude of projects out & in various stages & tools handy so if I find myself with even just a minute to spare, I can do something on one project or another. I dont have to fuss with getting kit out & putting it away.
Oh, and the art of waffling (my appologies for that!) is another thing I spend much time mastering, but I've finished eating so should probably go paint & get a diary updated ?

Monday 3rd November
This evening, I managed to go back for 'kit inspection' - checking that the previous weekends black base coat had covered everything. I found a few places that were previously missed (not the obscure 'under the shoulder pad' bits, but the obvious middle of the back bits!). While this was drying, I cut, trimmed and mounted another 24 of the little sods with their Rhinos. I want to be able to stagger the painting, so as I finish one lot, another will be half way through and another just started. It keeps things interesting and keeps the enthusiasm going.
This week might be a bit slow from now, as I am going to be busy almost every evening until next Monday. I will keep you all updated.
---
Dont worry Chris, there is not much chance of me stopping this now. There are too many people watching!
I think that the reason for me doing this is very different for the reason that Tuff is. I am looking to get a single (and my first) Epic army ready for games. That means that I will be using it all the time until I can get a second force done. That could be a while. So, I want an army that I am proud to use, obeys all the core rules and which will be good against a variety of enemies. I would love to add non-standard vehicles, but I think that I should get 4000 points done in very vanilla fashion first. But, I have had my eye on either a couple of the FW Warhounds, or a Reaver...
Tuff, it is good to know that you do have a life outside painting. But, it does make the amount and standard that you achieve even more incredible. If you spent all day painting, then I could justify why I was so much slower and not so impressive. I guess that it just comes down to practise, so I will need to keep painting steadily from now on. Who knows, maybe this kind of diary will be repeated for Gothic and my other projects... even if they are not of Epic or Gothic nature. Would anyone be interested in that?
Having things set up is a key thing. I just dont have the space. This means that even thinkabout painting takes time. I have requisitioned a tray from my better half and now I pick that up and use that.
I must admit that I rarely have 2 hours slid to paint. I can creap in about an hour every two days, which works out at a quarter of your time. I wish that I could get more organised and find more time. (The web site is in serious need of an update as well, and while I have plenty of material, I need to put that together.) I am starting now to put the painting tray in the car when I travel, just in case.
Thanks for the info, very enlightening. More soon.
