These are really awesome. Makes me want to dig out my own thousand sons but i have other stuff to paint.

Great job, please keep them coming. I especially like the idea of the defiler/paladin.

Thanks, guys.

Whats next?

Good question, to which the answer is these chaps:

A full formation of Chaos Terminators (or Chosen, if you prefer), including optional Champion and Icon Bearer.

When I first started putting this army together, I got a pack of Imperial Terminators along with the Chaos infantry boxes, as that would provide enough models to field the maximum number of Terminators/Chosen allowed by the army list (two formations of six), with the Chaos Lord stands clearly identifiable even when unpainted by the fact that all the models on the stand were the Chaos models. When I got some more boxes of Chaos infantry, I then added stands for champions and Icon Bearers, chopping the spikes off the top of all but the centre model to differentiate them from the Lord.

Presumably, the more important the champion, the more impressively his henchmen are armoured. Low-level sergeants lead most squads. Aspiring champions lead squads of beefier guys while the Lord's retinue are as well-equipped as the sergeants.

In addition, the Champion is identified by the flames on his shoulder pads, while the Lord sports similar flames and a red helmet.

Next up, I will probably either paint another retinue and then some aircraft, or some aircraft and then another retinue, depending on how the mood takes me.

Really, really like those termies. :agree:  Based together like that the size difference is hardly noticeable as well.

Clever idea with the Terminators :)

Mate what do you use for the base covering?

Is that just a fine sand and some fine flock? If so I really like the effect of the near black ground. I usually go a lighter sand colour but that looks much more striking in the photos.

Yeah, fine sand, painted black, drybrushed with codex grey and then lightly with skull white. Then add flock in patches (often carefully arranged to cover places where the sand is patchy or uneven). For some bases I prefer static grass, but I think on these the flock works better.

The bases are just the same as my 40k Chaos Marines, in fact.

Thanks, all.

Right. There have been a few delays: first while I painted my Warhound for ToEG09, then while I got myself a new paintbrush (my old 5/0 brush was in a fairly dreadful condition), and finally while I borrowed a camera so I could get a picture (mine's in for repairs). But I now have another retinue painted up:

Not terribly different from the last one, except that it's led by a Lord rather than a Sorcerer Lord, and there aren't any Rhinos. I eventually plan to do an extra Lord and Sorcerer, so that both retinues can be led by either character, along with some other character stands to swap in as well. I'd also like to add a few more Rhinos at some point, but those may have to wait for a while.

Despite saying last time that I was going to do some aircraft after these, I've changed my plans and now I'm thinking of doing some Thousand Sons next instead.

^ Thank you.

As promised, here are my Thousand Sons:

The Rhinos were, again, already done; only the infantry is new. The sorcerer models here only represent Aspiring Sorcerers, rather than the Sorcerer Lords I've used them for in other units. With the stands without sorcerer models having only four models on them, this makes for two squads of nine.

Sorry the picture isn't that clear; the camera I'm borrowing isn't very good for this sort of thing (mine isn't great, either, but it is better). That and the fact I'm a lousy photographer. In particular, the metallic bits are a lot golder than they look here. Once I get my camera back I might have a go at re-doing these.

^ Thanks. Incidentally, I'm guessing everyone noticed the couldn't-be-more-simple conversions on the Thousand Suns: little trapezia made from 300gsm card stuck to the heads. At one stage I considered trying to make loincloth/tabard things as well, but decided it wasn't worth it in the end.

Next are some Havocs. I've never much liked that term, incidentally. 'Havoc Squads' would be fine, but I've never liked to speak of 'a Havoc' or 'some Havocs'. Still, here they are:

While the models were all unpainted, I found the Havoc stands very difficult to distinguish at a glance from ordinary Chaos Space Marines. Unlike the Space Marine with Missile Launcher, the heavy weapon model isn't so obviously different from the others that you can pick him out at a distance, so without examining it closely, it's hard to tell whether there are one or two of them on the stand. I eventually decided to distinguish them by painting the regular CSMs' top-knots red, while doing them black on the Havocs. All of my 40k CSMs had black top-knots at the time, so I went and re-painted them to conform.

The Rhinos differ only subtly from the regular ones: the hatches on the roof and sides and the panels on the front are black rather than silver.

Next up will be a Forlorn Hope. I'm planning to paint the models a bit differently from normal to represent their role as scouts, give them a bit of camouflage. Actually trying to paint DPM at this scale would, I think, be beyond me, but a mix of green and brown armour plates might be possible.

Once they're done, I'll have exactly 4,500 points painted. I'll then take a break to paint another Warhound Titan for ToEG09. Then I'll see about some character stands for the retinues.
