Hey folks

I've got about 9 sprues of the plastic E:40K building sprues, and I'm thinking about making up a full set of terrain including buildings, hills, forests etc.

Has anyone tried using the moonscape craters for Epic? Techincally they're scalled for 40k, but Epic has bigger guns and so maybe it has bigger craters too? I was thinking maybe use the smallest ones as actual craters, and then the others could be turned into ponds/gullies/even hills maybe.  Has anyone used them at all? I'm guessing the blast scape could be equally useful wit ha bit of clever thinking.

Also, any bright ideas for terrain carrying cases? I'll probably be taking some of it to clubs and don't really want it getting smashed about and ruined.

Thanks folks

I've been thinking of getting some to provide broken ground for cover but not blocking line of sight.

Skip the GW cowpies and go for the Plastruct Craters . :agree:

Better value & more "Epic" in scale.

We have a set we use and it's alright for very large craters, but even the smallest is well over the height of a stand of epic miniatures.

I was expecting they would be, I was thinking planetary bombardment and laser beams from ships and so on.

Might take an infantry stand into a GW store and look at them close up to get inspired.  Maybe a teleportation catastrophe? Or maybe turn one into some sort of swamp/melting pot?

Any advice on the second question about transportation folks? Lots of people seem to rattle their's around in plastic bags and it seems a waste to spend time making it for it to get beaten up.

Cheers

The Moonscape ones don't look that exciting but I'm definitely planning on getting a set or two of their Blastscape ones - cool crashed spaceships and melted ground from orbital weapons

We use the craters one fairly extensively, for a couple of reasons.

They're fairly robust and easy to store (tossed in a crate afterwards).
They're plentiful (I bought 2 packs of 5).
They're easy to figure out what they are (currenty issues with LOS and buildings etc).
Most importantly IMO they fit the EA recommendations for terrain. The two largest are just over the 15-30cm prefered (32 and 32.5), and none are under 15cm in any true measurable direction.

They're not comparable to true craftsman terrain like I've seen, but for our games, they're more than adequate. For pics of on table, look at FrogBear's battle reports. There is usually a couple in each.

Nooo...Not the Blastscape thread from Dakka.  Man, there were some pissed off geeks because of that one.  The moonscapes are fine for what they are.  I own a set.

That thread is pretty shocking, not surprised GW are getting muchos returns, but this guy seems to be making something good out of it.  For Epic I'd be replacing the crashed ship anyway as it'd be out of scale so not such a big disaster.

Worth a look anyway, particularly as the Moonscape seems pretty good:

You may give a try to Amera Plastic Moldings. They ave a nice range of hills, craters etc...

On my side, I made my craters with some "plastirock" (it's the name in France). Some cheap clay that becomes rock solid when drying.

That's disappointing! They'd looked very good. Thanks for forewarning me! My are there a lot of pitchforks and flaming torches in that thread. Craters and crashed ships could be made but the melted ground from the spaceship weapon was my favourite bit and that doesn't look so do-able.

With the chunks of crashed rock are GW actually coming round to the idea that the logical way to take out a planet is to lob huge rock(s) at it, rather than sending precious ground troops in? It did it for the dinosaurs (till the Exodites came and put them back together again).

They do look awfull. One thought though: If these are indeed vacuum shaped the wrong way (ie over a positive mould rather than a negative), would it then be possible to use the pieces as a mould by filling the with resin or plaster or something similar for slightly better detail?

Someone on Dakka made a cast of the negative from the finished piece and reported that it came out as rubish.  It is pretty much a loser piece from what I've read.  I haven't seen it in person yet, but I won't be purchasing one.

I have those Plastruct Craters... they are nice.  I saw both sets of G/W Moon Craters and  Battlescape in W/D ... I thought they had potential for Epic.  I didn't have a problem with the crashed spaceships ... I mean a spaceship's size could be anything ...  8v)   As well as craters and other terrain damage ... those sizes too could vary.  And big is not a problem, in this case ...    But what I saw on the Dakka link posted here ... they are terrible !!     They must have used the masters in the pics in W/D and shown on Dakka ... G/W continues it's flat spin into oblivian ... sad, really ...  :sigh:
