I think I've read about loyalist Drop Pods being recovered by Thunderhawk Transporters  somewhere, possibly in one of the Imperial Armour books.

I would make sense, although I don't think Retinues and Forlorn hopes should have to pay through the nose for them, so highly variable points accross the formations might be in order!

Hena: They are allowed to move around and re-deploy troops even on a 40k sized table. Such an ability would certainly be appropriate to an Epic sized battlefield, moreso even.

Rules for them to fly back up to orbit to extract troops could be added, but fleeing that way would only be a rare occurrence to during battle anyway.

The more important thing is that they should be able to move about the table like the transport skimmer they function as once they have dropped in.

Well maybe someone could give them a try as a permanent upgrade to a formation and see how they do.

Now, would this be a "bunch" of Dreadclaws, say four to eight to carry a formation of eight units or somethine abstracted like the "single" Drop Pod used by Marines?

Doesn't the Drop Pod stay in board and keep shooting unless destroyed now days?

Haven't transport Drop Pods had Storm Bolters on them since at least the start of 3rd edition 11 years ago?

I'm more inclined to think that it's more rules to make people buy this model than other way around.

Of all parts of GW, Forgeworld is one of the most inclined to make models and rules that make no sense in the game, but which are just cool.

Why else make an Atlas recovery tank, a Trojan-and-trailer ammunition carrier, heck a 40k scale Manta?

FW make plenty of stuff that's designed to fill out the background, not just be really awesome at killing the enemy in games (that's the task of every release put out by the Core studio).

Not abstracted, they'd operate like Skimming Rhinos that can Planetfall... that being pretty much exactly what they are in the background.

They would be vehicles with a transport capacity of 2 stands / 1 terminator stand / 1 dreadnought, so you would need 4 for that formation.

The model it a totally different design with many small thrusters on it's circumference rather than the Marine Drop Pod just having one. It is also fitted with advanced machine spirit in the background like those Land Raiders have. It moving about like that seems fine to me and quite simply is the way the unit functions and always should have.

Can't we just keep it simple and follow all the drop pod rules minus the deathwind?

I'm not convinced that a planetfalling skimmer transport (with no guns) wouldn't be simple.

Fair call. The only issue is then you have to get models for them all instead of just perhaps one pod "marker" like the drop pod rule.

Still I can see a horde of them gliding to earth with Khorne berserkers onboard might look kinda cool and a bit scary for the opponent

Anyone want to suggest a profile and upgrade points costs for them?
