Land Raiders, Bad?

I've played a handful of games now and have been taking two formations of land raiders every time (at the 350 pt costing). I can't figure out why people keep saying they are terrible. All I've ever seen them do is destroy tank formations, really destroy light vehicle formations and then proceed to refuse to die for several turns. Can someone tell me what the weaknesses of the formation are and why they are considered a bad choice?

Probably my first question is what forces have you been coming up against?

They are 85 points each and an AT target. Basically a magnet for fire if you have an 'average' marine army and in Epic enough of that reduces their armour saves considerably.

As noted, the consensus is that at 350 points (and ~85 point upgrade) they are fine.  At the original 400 points/100 upgrade, they are sub-par.

I've been muddling around with friends who are also new. Playing the two armies I have, orks and marines. The opposing orks are a couple of warbands, couple of blitz brigades, couple of speed freeks, stompas and a gargant. I have been carefull to stay away from the MW shots however... that might be part of it.

I think we're playing with a lot fewer MW shots then the standard lists you guys are used to.

try using Land Raiders against some Eldar armys or Guard and it's a different story, but using them with a landing Craft can be more useful
