However we've had some doubts about the design. How do people feel about it? Like we said it is easy to remove if you don't want it. It may be fluffy for a scout tank to have such a device, but it may not be all that practical model wise. Other suggestions like ways to sexy it up a bit are also welcome.

Argh. Adding an extra reply to avoid the annoying ghost-post issue  :upside:

I like the idea, but as you say, it needs some sexying up.

Needs to be a decent sensor array. Make it look like it can do general and laser comms with orbital assets and relay info across regiments. Oh and some signally lights for old fashioned morse. Plus maybe some speakers :)

Okay, thats a lot, but the directional comms and signal lights plus a decent dish would be do able?

As long as it still fits the shape of the hull when in horizontal position (the arm follows the treadguard) there's no problem in adding more gubbins :). I guess we just need to strike a balance so it doesn't get too crowded.

We could add some kind of a dish on one side. A small searchlight/sensor/targetter  bulb on the other (or on the top) and maybe something that looks like a swiwel between the arm and the actual sensor head. Please bear in mind though that this thing is little more than a millimetre wide so the risk of casting issues or bending could cause problems if we make it too complex

Overall though: Should we go for this design? The alternative is just leaving it off completely. (Which also looks nice. It is really just an extra accessory.) The basic turret already has a radar dish, a targetter and radio equipment built directly into the turret.

I think having a nice big clear signals array ould be great for HQ tank. Do you have a picture in same format of basic turret, preferably side by side with HQQ tank so can easily compare.

Cheers

James

I guess it comes down to casting feasability. Maybe there should be the basic arm then a command set like GZG's engineering set? So the extra gubbins left to the owners discretion.

I'm not really keen on the idea. Things that stick up tend to get knocked about during play (at least if you're a clumsy oaf like me), and create havoc with battle-tested minis transport systems.

And here's an older pic of the basic turret (sans a few details that were added later)

That, along with casting issues is my main concern as well. If we're going to go through with it I think we will model a curring grove along the endge of the swivel so it is easily removed by those who wand a more gamer-friendly miniature. Alternatively the arm can of course just be left in the horizontal position in which it is cast.

I am not too keen on having the arm cast as a seperate piece. The more small fiddly bits the greater the chances of mispackaged or lost parts Look at the FW eldar vehicles for a classic example of this...  :glare:

If you are going to do that big periscopic sensor mast why not add a bunch of ATGMs on the back deck (canted upward) for nice turret down engagements. (also useful spare for other projects :) )
