I recently dug out my imperial ships and i can makea  fleet that consists of

1 Emperor
2 Dictators
3 Gothics
1 Dominator
2 Tyrants

which comes out to 1885 points and id be required to tak an admiral so an admiral for 100 points + sharks for the emperor for a grand total of 1990 points.

Is this fleet really hindered by the lack of escorts? (ive only got 3 cobras to work with anyway)

should i be worried about anything?

A reasonable fleet- three Gothics is a little unusual, and you have a lot of attack craft carriers, but I would be happy to play against it...
More escorts: Yes! I love using escorts as they add more interest to the tabletop and are very useful for getting in behind a capital ship or two and bugging them for a few turns...
Cobras are the best, with their torps, but Swords also come in handy with massed battries..

Buy more escorts!! ?

Escorts are essential to fleets, and should not be over looked.  I usually go for 4 escorts per cruiser minimum.

However, if you dont own any, and are short of cash, then use what you have.  I wouldn't mind playing you, as I believe you'd be hindered by their absence rather than appearing cheesy.

As for the list, you can try and cover up your short fall of escorts by taking advantage of all that ordnance.  Assault boats are great for getting rid of opposing escorts, and then overwhelme the cruisers with bombers.  The handy thing about assault boats too is their highspeed.

Also of use would be nova cannons.  You could get rid of the opponents escorts at range with a couple of well placed shots. (the first to knock down shields, the second to destroy).

If you can get rid of the opponents escorts, you'll be laughing.

Are gothics not worth the points? I just liked the way the parts looked without batteries, and the batteries wihtout the lances...

I should point out that the only game that people seem to play in my area is warhammer 40k, so i rarely get a game of BFG in, so i dont really know what works and what doesnt

I'd get rid of some gothics and put some Lunars in.  Gothics are alright, but really need to be supported, having a Lunar or two support them can really make them a lot more effective.

Yeah, I agree, supported with Lunars, Gothics can really do the damage... If you field them on their own or in pairs, they do form ideal orbital defence destroyers- taking a Ramillies quadrant down with just batteries can get difficult if you can't roll enough sixes! ?:;):
