Imperators always looked like the plastic model, as far back as the artwork in Adeptus Titanicus, IIRC.

That's not quite true. The carapace was never nearly as elaborate. I'm not at home, so I can't scan a copy of the drawing of an Emperor Titan from the AT rulebook.

Also, per the original fluff (which admittedly is minimal) the Warmonger was never supposed to be an Imperator varient, but rather a smaller Emperor class Titan, the same way a Reaver is a smaller Battle class Titan. It's for this reason that I dislike the Warmonger conversion kit.

I converted an Imperator into a Warmonger last year, and I blogged each stage of the process here. You should also find a complete list of all the parts I used. Here's an estimate of the cost of the whole thing:

* £35 for the carcass of an Imperator on eBay, + £5 shipping
* £10 for the Hydra turrets
* £10 for the model kits I cannibalised
* £12 for a razor saw
* about £15 for various sprays and paints

which adds up to a total of about £90 (US$180) for everything.

Here's a picture of the end result:

Love it. That is one sick conversion - I think those bristling hydra barrels really add some much-needed dynamism and interest.
