Moving to tactically better position while "disorganized" is still an awkward concept.
No, you wouldn't move into (potential) enemy fire to get cover if you're broken. No way. Fearless or not.
At several points you've made statements like this which seem to reflect what a rational person might think would happen.  However, group action is often counter-intuitive, especially in high pressure situations.  Things which seem utterly reasonable are darn near impossible to achieve and things which seem like they would never happen can be drilled into reflex.
Disorganized moves to a better position is not awkward.  In real life all sorts of situations disorganized moves towards the enemy and objectives happen due to training and pre-planning. It's actively taught as a reaction to certain kinds of tactical situations - not just taught but drilled so that individuals know roughly what to do even in the absence of orders actively coordinating movement.  Teams and squads might be scattered and eventually have to pause and regroup, but it is done successfully on a regular basis.
Plus, units get "do this at any cost" kinds of orders, so you keep going to that bridge even when your squad is decimated and your reinforcement is 15 minutes behind.
Closing range to get into cover is definitely not "no way."  It is so common in real life combat that it's trivial.
