While Otterman works on the Trident Tank Hunter, Tom and I have been discussing the Prometheus Flame Thrower a bit. The design is fairly simple with a turret containing the actual weapon and a fuel tank mounted behind the turret. So far we've been trying to design all turrets as single piece models. However, if we make this one a single piece it will not be possible to mount the flame thrower turret in anything but a straight forward position.
We then have the issue of the turet mount hole in the chassis. This may or may not line up to fit with the flame thrower turret while leaving enough room to mount the fuel tank behind it. If this turns out to be the case we may have to make a fuel tank with some kind of roof plate that extends forward and mounts the turret on top.

So, the question is: How big an issue is it to have a turret that can/can't be turned in any position? Is it getting too fiddly to have seperate pieces (they will be about the size of a E:A version Razorback turret)?

Any ideas we haven't thought of so far? Any particular cool features from flamethrower tanks you'd like to see added?

Just adding an extra post. This topic seems to be "ghost-posting" everytime a reply starts a new page.

One of the design issues we are struggling with at the moment is the Flamethrower Tank, or the Prometheus as the Guild call it :D.

The current turret would work but wouldn't rotate, I feel a rotating turret is of course vital to hose down marauding infantry, so we have a couple of options.

A) A higher turret that includes the fuel tank.
B) A two piece turret, one being a fuel tank that fixes on the hull via a plate of some form and the second being a turret that slots into that.
C) A fixed one piece turret.
D) A genius idea that you can't wait to express :D.

Well now that the Ghosts are gone ... :sulk:   I'd say a Separate Turret with separate or attached fuel tank ... :))

I prefer option B, but I'll be happy with whatever you decide.

Hehe :D

Well two posts explaining the dilemma should hopefully make things clearer to people :D

edit: Here's a pic for reference. Also I've been having a few second thoughts on the turret of the Hector IFV. Since the flamethrower and the IFV basically share the same turret shape I thought I might as well ask here if there's any thoughts on the shape? We've gone with a fairly angular look for the new Guild tanks so the Russian BMP inspired circular turrets might look out of place stylistically. Or?

I like the wider feel of the round turret but I don't think it looks right with the rest of the stuff you've done. Perhaps make the round one more angular as a compromise between the two?

Hm. I suppose a roughly hexagonal turret could be done. Would also look different from anything I've seen before.

In other news, the Guild MBT will be released June the 13th in the following formations.

Guild MBT Squadron (3 MBTs) £5.95
Guild MBT Centuria (10 MBTs) £15.95

And the whopper:

Guild Armoured Legion (100 MBTs) £127.60 (If you paint them all, pictures are mandatory!! :D)

Now, like the Legion Army deal as more modular tanks become available, you'll be able to incorporate them into your Armoured Centuria bundles (price may vary).

As the Armoured Centuria will get free postage as it is over £50.

Oh - in other news, to celebrate my birthday, 10% discount on all EW, and free postage over £50 for the next week at least.

I'm actually comfortable with C -- flamethrowers are not the best thing to hose down marauding infantry anyway -- they're a specialized weapon intended for use against fixed defenses.

If there's concern about close defense for the Prometheus, I'd suggest that the engineering solution was a range of different fragmentation devices.

Flamethrowers may be spectacular in theory (and in reality) but they have a limited and specific tactical use.

Woohoo!

Edit - Oh, and there's a secret message on the bottom of each MBT. It's the wrong secret message, but a message nonetheless.

I like the round turret....it looks nicer than the small box and has a certain thematic resonance.  Round turrets also make a lot of sense.  I too could do without the sponsons.....they look kinda kooky on an otherwise quite modern looking design.

For the flamer tank, is the "grossly exaggerated external fuel tank gimmick" really necessary.  These are sleek, modern designs.  Just do a standard turret with something that clearly says "flame thrower" as the main gun.  Ripley's weapon of choice from Aliens might be useful thematic inspration.

(Oh, and Flamethtowers should probably have nice LOONG barrels so the flame clears the hull :) )
