What, overpowering a unit to make more sales? Who would do such a naughty thing?

well we haven't had any meaningful discussion in a few days, so lets get the ball rolling. we can see that some of the changes have been accepted- monolith formations, TK/range reduction to pylon, etc.
i realize there are a few things to work out like the wraiths, possible change to abbatoir, and hopefully SR. so what's next? are we just waiting for corey to give the ok on these?
i'm not trying to rush anyone, just more or less trying to get the discussion going again.

I think we're waiting to hear from Corey, the Army Champion.

back on topic, can anyone tell me a reason for the variable SR.
couldn't that same reason be used for just about any army out there? don't you think a chaos warrior would fight better if his god was on the battlefield w/ him?
seriously, we're talking about robots here. i could kick him in the jimmy or pat him on the back and his reaction would be the same.
it's a special rule that's just not needed.

They aren't just robots.

They are what's left of the origional race, bound forever into the artificial bodies they now wear.  For most of them, their personality just didn't survive the transfer.  For others (like Lords and Immortals who went willingly) their personalities did survive.. mostly.  Some were almost completely intact from what the stories say.

But fundamental was how they are bound to their C'tan, and together.  The Necron's aren't imaginative, or creative.  They lack even the flexibility of the Ultramarines, who are inflexible.  Thus they do not react swiftly to the changing environment of the battlefield.

However, if they are led by a C'tan (or one of the Lords who still has his personality intact) THAT individual does have the flexibility, origionality, and creativity to adjust on the fly.  Because the Necrons are so closely linked, not even requiring verbal communication, such a leader can effectively direct them as if they were an extension of his own will.

Thus the crappy SR, is the SR of your average Necron Lord.  The good SR is the SR of a C'tan or an intact Lord.  And because they exert such total control over their underlings, their SR is what you use for as long as they are around.  If they are gone, then the Necrons must fall back on their own, limited, abilities.

the same rule could be used in any army. this causes the player to always take the c'tan or warbarque. i'm sure you've heard all this before but i don't seee the need for this special rule.

How about simply purchase the Supreme Cmmander abillity and an increased Srtategy Rating for one of the Necron Lords? This would represent a high ranking (Gold ranked)Necron Lord with most of its personality still intact.

Not really.

Most of the other armies are comprised of Individuals.  Their strategy ratings are based on their training and dicipline.

The only other army that isn't comprised of individuals are the Tyrinids, with their Hive Mind.  And as I recall they have their own special rules concerning what happens when those creatures lose their link to the Hive Mind.

another thing that kind of bugs me about the variable SR is w/ the harvester engines. if (accroding to the fluff) they are the only things that keep the c'tan allive, don't you think they might have an interest in them while in combat? i can't imagine them just throwing them in the line of fire an not being somewhere close to guide them.

That happens in higher point value games...

i didn't mean that they have to be on the board next to them. i simply meant they would be somewhere to provide support/leadership to them. they might not be taking an active part in the battle but would still be influencing it.

Corey: The pricing of the units in any list is dependant on the strategy rating of the army; hence marines cost more per unit than their stats might suggest. By having a variable SR, you throw this out the window. Necrons at SR 1 are worth a lot less points than at SR 3, yet you pay the same points for them. The list can never truly be balanced while the SR remains variable.
