Since I'll be divorced soon, that might actually happen some day. Mrs. DS never would have gone for me traveling abroad solo. Heck, she wasn't too happy when I flew down to Texas by myself to visit cousins.

Right on guys! 1 day and much interest already! I'll answer some question and such like before i go to bed and look forward to hearing what people think on the morrow.

-Dark Eldar: YES! Sorry all, forgot about them; of course they're allowed in :-) (as much as i hate all those TK weapon bearing aircraft!)
-Points Scoring: in all fairness then i see no reason not to go with Rug's suggestion that we use the standard scoring system; people seem mature enough to understand how i'm billing this event.
-Tourney/Friendly: I'll be keeping it as a friendly tournament enviroment as opposed to just a collection of friendly games' see 'points scoring' above.
-MEPHISTON: Alansa has it right; it only take 1.5hrs on the train to get to bristol and to allow people to get here i may even consider running the event from, say, 10-6 to allow people time to arrive.  If we're talking about friendly forum members letting people crash i could almost certainly put 3-4 of you up for the night though bedding would be required...that's just a thought for anyone who was desperate to attend :-)
-Venue: No, we've not got anyhwhere in mind yet; i'll start looking around soon though
-Multiple Armies: Yes, that's something we'd talked about beforehand actually :-) The only caveat being that we'd ask that which armies you use are either a) predetermined, or b) randomised. I know for certain that if i took part there's a couple i'd like to use but for simplicity some may wish to stick to a single army.  I'd also note that as far as the playtesting element of this event goes i'd reccomend people stuck with ONE army for the sake of thoroughness. HOwever, as a friendly i wouldn't discourage either type of play.
Marines: There are so many marine army lists out there i might just allow them all! Perhaps i'd have to take this on a case by case basis though' i initially said no 'sub races' but Pulsar has mentioned this interest in fielding Black Templars so we'll see; a line needs to be drawn between what people want to play and 'fairness'. For example; i've not much faith in how useful/needed Penal Legion or Catachan Guard armies are but don't see why i would'n't let the templars in.

If I lived in London I'm sure your right about the 1.5 hour journey. Just looked at the rail option and for a 09:00 start I'd have to leave at 04:30 from MK and for the more leisurely 10:00 start at 05:30. Leaving Bristol at 19:30 I'd be back in MK at about 22:00.

Didn't even bother looking at a cost 'cos while I enjoy playing Epic, I won't enjoy it having got up at 03:30  

Of course I could drive but 2.5 hours each way in the dark doesn't really apeal either. No matter, plenty of other tournaments in the year, and I'm sure you'll get lots of interest.

Oh yeah; forgot about Nottingham M! If other's wanted to come from up your end maybe you oculd all drive but numbers ARE looking pretty good you're right :-)
I'll talk to Al and Ben and we'll get a hall and stuff arranged and then give more information.

Not too sympathetic for your northeners... now you know how annoying it is for us that all the epic events are up that end of the country!  

The club has used a few different places in the past, we can look into those fairly easily. As mentioned the club possesses huge ammounts of great terrain and boards so thats no problem.

As mentioned I'd like a less competative event too, Epic is more than sufficiently catered for with cut-throat WAAC tournaments so it would be nice to do something a bit different, allowing people to play using armies with more character that they might not field otherwise out of desire to always maxise effectiveness. Similarly allowing multiple armies on the day works providing that a mechanism is in place to prevent blatent tailoring..

Open to newbs? I've yet to play a game but winter 2010 I'll be in cardiff, just a short skip and a jump away.

Besides, deadlines are good painting incentives. My looted 'Dark Eldar' would enjoy the attention.


But seriously, if it's centered around playtesting I can see inexperience being an annoyance for the opponent.

Hey, I may be a northerner, but Milton Keynes is not in the North! I admire all of you that travel massive distances to play Epic. And the reason the tournaments are currently in the Midlands? That's were the organiser lives. Ginger stepped up to run one tournament in the south last year, the more that can be organised in different places the better.

Do you really think that the current Epic tournaments are WAAC? I'd certainly say that the vast majority are there to play a game they enjoy. Some of the players are really good at the game, and I suspect good at any game they play, but I don't think everyone is there to have fun first. As ever ymmv.

What is WAAC? This may not be the place to discuss such things; i don't feel the tourney's that i attend to be overtly competive or such; and would note that this one isn't being run as an alternative but as an addition; just with a twist!

MD: yes! Definitely open to New Players :-) Don't be put off by the suggested playtesting theme; i don't envision any hardcore number crunching; just the oppurtunity to see how things work on a practical basis.

All tournaments are open to newbies, and nearly all my armies are painted only because I was committed to taking them to a tournament!

Oh and WAAC is Win At All Cost.

My mate has been relocated to Bristol as part of his job...two birds one stone springs to mind! So i'm a definate maybe.......

Playing lists i've never played before seems really appealing, never played Tau/Necrons/DE and Tyranids once or twice in about 5 years.

What's this 'N erc' thing i read earlier? Is it a downloadable list of armies?

Epic tournaments are definitely open and welcoming to new players - a new player at Open War had only been playing for a month and finished mid-table(and more importantly enojoyed himself)

WAAC means 'Win At All Costs' which very rarely happens at any EPIC event within the UK (and I should know, I attend most of them!).

WAAC is when you build your army to distroy your opponent in the quickest time possible with as little enjoyment (for your opponent, and probably you) as possible. This tends to happen in games where the idea is to kill as many points of your opponents army (therefore you build your army to do this as quickly as possible). Because in EPIC every formation can claim objectives this very rarely happens and because of this most players have a lot of fun and that's why I keep on attending tournaments.

What your saying is rather insulting to those who do well in EPIC tournaments within the UK; basically your suggesting that, instead of them being very good at the EPIC game (tactics, troop deployment, picking targets and yes building a good army) that they scour the rulebook to find any broken rule and use it to maximum effect to win as quickly as possible.

This has certainly not been my experience and if it has been yours (sorry I don't know who you are as I presume Hymirl isn't your real name) then maybe you need to change tactics, or learn how to use units to a better effect.

However this isn't the tread to discuss this so sorry,
