Because Ions aren't needed when you have a scorpionfish. The vast array of decent AP in the Tau list makes the Ions obselete.

Not to mention that at long range Rails are equal in AP ability to Ions given the need to advance/double as opposed to sustain/advance.

Mephiston: Another 5.1 change - the Scorpionfish no longer has Supreme Commander as an option (though it needs a technical edit to make this clear).

Sorry, with 2 formations of stingrays and the scorpion fish I'm good for AP guided missiles. All the tanks have smart missiles too.

If it does stay at 200 points, I'll actually have to consider whether I take it or not... at 150 points, 2 x MW2+ (TkD3) just seemed like the obvious choice to me...


200 pts will be the cost going forward. As Chroma had brought up, 150 seemed too good. I also remember when the Hero was 200 pts and I'm not sure why the cost was dropped. Probably one of those 4.x series debates.

My bad on the list that had two of the same upgrades. That is not correct, so I'll fix that tonight.

Also, let's be very clear. Sarcasm aside, one data point is not a trend. Not taking Ion cannons does not mean anything. I could just as easily take them and then confidently state that they are balanced because they were present. I like to take them (Note: I am stating a personal preference, which is not "data") because I prefer to strip out as much of the opponent's infantry as possible, as quickly as possible, as infantry vs. infantry match ups are bad for the Tau. You guys may decide to handle things in your own way, but short of taking on a Minervan / AMTL / OGBM list, I tend to tackle those things that would impede what I have in my list, which by the way, often times is mech FWs. So I like a lot of AP shots in my lists.

Do other Tau units provide AP support? Yep. Do they all handle it at the range of an Ion cannon? No, not always. So ranged support, independent of ML support is of value to me and how I play.

Does that mean that the IC is good for you? No, it depends on what you value and I don't assume that everyone plays the way that I do. Nor do I insist that you do.

Anyway, I'm interested in seeing what Hena does...

18 HHs and not an Ion cannon in sight. Yet they don't need changing, right?

Of course, he is only one player, but don't let that stand in your way there Zombo....

Plus the 75cm range is handy too. The only ground formation without a markerlight is the scorpion fish so that's not really a limit either.

Except you have only 1 formation that can ML anything at the weapons' maximum ranges. Otherwise you have to be within 30cm to use ML.... I'd like to see how long the HHs will last that close to the enemy....

Once 5.1 removes the SC re roll from the scorpion (I really thought it came with the upgrade tbh) I'll probably drop that and the hero. That gives me 500 points back to play with.
