Well, folks. Here is another BatTrep from the GW store. This time playing against TheDracon's formidable Dark Angels with my Saim Hann Eldar Host.

I was early at the store and managed to grab the only table left... man, was it busy. I had taken along some extras (some of my better minis, Necrons, Sisters of Battle and things) and while setting up this attracted a stir of interests from old and new players. I again passed the TacComm address about and shilled for NetEpic like a grifting whore. (If I could have hired some buxom babes with tight T'shirts with NetEpic on it then I would have). I spoke to one of the lads who had watched the last game and it seems we may have another Ork player joining the fray. Again it was a kind reception from all the staff and multitude of 40K and LotR players nearby. Cheers, lads.

So once TheDracon arrived we got to setting up and sorting out our force and Objectives etc.

TheDracons Daunting Dark Angels Force...

Death Wing Company
Assault Company
Devestator Company
Knight Errant Troop
Warhound Scout Titan Pack (Vulcan Mega Bolter x2... each I think)
Reaver Titan (Volcano Cannon, Turbo Laser, ?)

TheDracon had managed to paint his Titans to stunning effect in the colours of the Dark Angels 5th Company (Cool bit of background fluff, Richard you'll need to post the Titans names please). I took pictures but I was very impressed with the painting style... he even managed to find the time from the last game to have based and partly painted his Assault Company too. I haven't done a damn thing since then... snot'fair!

TURN 1

Eldar wins initiative and force the Dark Angels to go first.

We had decided to disallow the First Fire activation Tactic in this game to speed things up and because it just made more sense to us both.


Not in any order of activation but from memory.

The Devastators hold fast, prepared to volley fire a hail of Krak Missiles at opportunity targets. The Assault Company Rhino's speed up to the ruins near the centre and on the right flank. Rapidly dispersing from the Rhino's the Assault Troops secures two objectives. Deploying from their Land Raiders the Deathwing make a general Advance on both flanks but are strongest on the left with two detachments and the Company Commander. A Troop of Knight Errant also reinforce this flank. They all ready their weapons to lay down covering fire for the further forward Assault elements.
The Reaver stands resolute amongst the Devastator Detachments while the Warhounds both head for a gap in the terrain on the right flank.



With a scream and hiss of blazing hot iron the Avatar strides forward, It's flaming spear dripping molten metal like drops of blood. In it's wake the entire Spirit Host Advance in the centre followed by their guiding Warlock. The Phantom moves to the side of the Spirit Host and uses the ruins before it to block LOS from some units. The Towering Knights in their ghostly armour stride forward securing the Phantoms right while the Fire Knights remain motionless awaiting the order to fire, only one of their number... the Fire Gale can see the enemy. The Bright Knights trot forward keeping the central hill between them and one of the Warhounds, while keeping the other in LOS. The Revenant follows closely behind doing the same. The last Revenant takes up position on the Dark Angels left flank. From the trees the Revenant can fire along the Marine Advance and at the Revenant or Knights Errant while keeping most of the Deathwing out of LOS. Jetbikes and Vypers take up positions behind the central hill and on the Marines right. On the enemy right a Squad of Exarchs and the Warlock move into the woods facing the Warhounds. The Dark Reapers in the open stand fast and also face the enemies Warhounds.


The Swooping hawks in a seemingly suicidal charge attack the Dark Angel Assault Troops guarding an Objective on the Right Flank. The Rhino APC's open fire with their point defence Bolters and manage to snatch one unit out of the air before they can land. Another squad of Swooping Hawks sweep in and claim the Objective in the central ruins in the face of the Dark Angels Advance.

The shooting begins with a salvo of plasma missiles from the Dark Reapers. They quickly strip the closest warhound of it's shields but can't manage to hit the target. The Dark Angels Devastators reply with a torrent of missile fire but with very few viable targets their choices are limited. Still, in the first volley they manage to destroy a Bright Knight. The Fire Storm Knights using the Fire Gale as a spotter launch their Plasma storm of Missiles at the Deathwing. A Land Raider and Terminator unit disappear in a blinding barrage. The Fire Gale also hits the Deathwing with a blast from it's Maelstrom Laser. More Devastators target the Spirit Host and fair better taking down three Wraithlord Dreadnoughts before they can fire. The Warlock on the Marines right casts an Eldritch Storm as the Command Falcon takes a shot at the shieldless Warhound but misses. The Eldritch Storm throws the Assault troops and Rhino's off the Objective in the ruins and blocks the LOS of the Dark Angel units behind them. More Devastators lay down fire on the Towering Knights this time, however the Holofields combined with their tough armour means they remain undamaged. The Spirit Host Warlock attempts to cast Psychic Lock on the Reaver Titan but it is just millimetres out of range. The Reaver targets the Phantom with it's Volcano Canon and Turbo Laser but both fail to hit.



Close Combat is swift. One of the Swooping Hawks is dispatched by an Assault Marine while another destroys a Rhino with it's Krak Grenades. The other Swooping Hawk is left in a stalemate with another Rhino

We had forgotten to take pictures during the firing and we had been getting too many jeers from the 40K lot (all in good fun) asking if the picture taking was why it took so long to play Epic... who knows, maybe so.  :tongue:


The Advance Fire Phase saw the Bright Knights fire into the Warhound and riddling it's entire leg assembly fusing it into uselessness. That Titan was going nowhere. It attempted to reply with it's two Vulcan Mega Bolters on the Swooping Hawks but they were just out of range. The Revenant behind the Bright Knights launched it's missiles directly at the displaced Assault Marines near the Eldritch Storm but unfortunately killing none before it turned both Pulse Lasers on the Warhound. Shot after shot either bounced off armour or missed the template of the lucky Titan. The Deathwing detachment were out of range or LOS to any targets and the Land Raiders couldn't hit the elusive Knights.

The second Warhound attempted to fire it's Mega Bolter and Melta Cannon (TheDracon, you had asked if the Melta Cannon would have effected the Avatar. Yes it would but you were out of range anyway.) at the Avatar but was just out of range again. The Spirit Host fired off their lasers at the Reaver but either failed to hit or they were out of range, just. The Errant Titans tracked their Thermal Cannons towards the Swooping Hawks before them managing to blast one into a roast chicken. The Towering Knights replied destroying one of the Errants with their Maelstrom Lasers and again killing a Deathwing Land Raider and a couple of Veteran Terminator stands. The Deathwing blasted away at the Swooping Hawks while the Land Raiders targeted the Towering Knights. Again a Swooping Hawk was torn apart in the hail of fire but the Knights weathered the storm untouched. The last Revenant sent a torrent of missiles into the Assault troops killing a stand and a Rhino while it's Pulse Lasers focused on the Revenant... but only managed to take down one shield. The Phantom Titan braced it's stance and aimed it's two Tremor Cannon along a convergent path towards the towering Reaver Titan. Along the weapons path the ground tore itself apart. The ground shook and gouts of earth sprayed up along a massive crack that zigzagged towards the Reaver. A Devastator unit disappeared down a fissure as the Reaver's leg was hit. It all rested on a 4+ roll... and he bloody made it. Damn! The Phantom contented itself with riddling the Warhound it could see with shots from it's Wing Lasers, taking down all it's shields but doing no further damage. (Some People are just too lucky sometimes).  :tongue:

Turn 1. END PHASE

The damaged Warhound was irreparable but raised a shield, while the other managed to raise one also. The Reaver also got it's shield back on line. The squads of Swooping Hawks, both broken made their Morale rolls. At the end of the Turn the Eldar Held 5 Objectives while the Marines Held two. Two more were contested and the only VP from kills were from the Swooping Hawks that the Marines had killed.

Saim Hann Eldar: 25VP        Dark Angel Marines: 14VP

Turn 2

Running out of time we tried to rush on with the game... this had an alarming effect on my game play. That's my crap excuse and I'm sticking to it... while TheDracon kept his nerve.  


The Dark Angels win the initiative this turn and make the Eldar move first, dirt rotten... grumble, grumble.




Again, the Avatar heads for the Dark Angel Lines. In an unprecedented move the Knight Errants enter the ruins and challenge the swooping Hawks to a pure fist fight...

I did find it odd that the Knights found the upstairs navigable and sturdy enough but in the interests of fair play I let it slide... Oi! TheDracon, did you hear that? :p

The other Swooping Hawks get pounced on by the Assault Marines which are then later pounced on by the Exarchs.

The damaged Warhound... didn't move.  Hah! Serves it right...


Like a crashing wave a whole detachment of Assault Marines and Escorting Rhinos surge over the hill and into the waiting Eldar Jet Bikes, followed by their Commander who chose a Knight to molest... of course being the sport I am, I let them... and then told TheDracon they couldn't pin the skimmers or Knight. Bloody Errant Knights in buildings... grumble, grumble.  :))



Predictably my Vypers pull back and my Revenant strides to the top of the central hill for a commanding view of the battle... and secured an Objective too. A detachment of Devastators snap fire on the Vypers... killing two and then I get a stupid idea. I send a squad of Jet Bikes at the just fired Devastators... they are all gunned down by another detachment of Snap Firing Devastators... I send in another squad... which are also annihilated by the same tactic from the last detachment of Devastators. Still they were unbroken, just. (I should have pulled back and used firepower to whittle down the VP rich Companies before doing something like that, but there was no time.)

The Bright Knights move into the woods vacated by the Exarchs securing the Objective there from a charging Devastator Command stand and Rhino. The impudent little rascal.
The Spirit Host again Advance forward and quick as a flash an Assault Company are on them. Another Vyper Squadron is pulled back to lay down fire on any surviving Assault Marines, but with Wraithlords having a 4+ Caf I felt confident enough.

A unit of Jet Bikes shot forward taking the Objective the Assault Marines had just left, losing one of the number later to fire from the Warhound that was mostly out of fire arc... but that one was enough to break the Wind Rider Host. Bahh!

The Reaver strode forward in hopes of better targets, The Phantom again sidesliped to the right but this time in order to line up both Warhounds with it's Tremor Cannons. The Towering Knights took up positions in the woods replacing the Revenant on the Dark Angels left flank as it dashed forward trying to keep the Reaver in it's sights. The Darkwing stayed put. Tracking the Eldar Titan as it came into range.

Hiya, seems pretty accurate to me so far.( pesky eldar and their holo fields, bah humbug).
It was great to get a game against some1 who obviously knows what they are doing and how their army works, still finding my feet here after a 13 year break.

I promise once the move is over and we have broadband in the new house I'll post plenty of pics and reports.

Right now just finding five minutes to get online and post this pityfull reply wasnt easy.

As for the knights well when you are that big and heavy you dont need stairs, you bring the floor down or punch your lance throuhg it and turn the room into a blender squishing the budgies inside and making smoothies out of them, mmmmmm smoothies!!  :evil:

The First Fire phase saw the Deathwing and their Land Raiders taking a few shots at both the Revenants without success while the Avatar throws his Wailing Doom at the Warhound before him, which falls short. The Warlock in the woods on the Marines right casts another Eldritch storm, this time amongst the Deathwing Terminators sending them all over the place and unable to fire... and again cutting off LOS from the units behind.

The Spirit Host Warlock Mind Blasts the impudent Assault Marines who dare attack him.
I wasn't sure if that one was legal, I couldn't remember. Conflict between old and new rules. TheDracon was good enough to let it slide so all's fair.  :agree:  When I get a chance I'll re-read the ruling about that for next time.


The Fire Knights launch another direct Barrage attack destroying a unit of Assault Marines and a Rhino on the central hill. The undamaged Warhound turned it's Vulcan Mega Blasta and Melta Cannon (Yes, I know... but he was too happy to tell him they can't take 'em for Warhounds.) on the one Jetbike in it's fire arc... with predictable results... um, it killed it incase you were wondering. One more Objective for the Dark Angels.

The Close Combat was fast and furious. The Errants squished the Swooping Hawks into a gooey paste while the Exarchs kicked Assault Marine butt like a bunch of henchmen in a bad Steven Siegal movie. The Swooping Hawks did well but none survived. The Objective Remained contested.

It was at this point that our time at the store had run out and it was time to leave. We hurriedly packed our things away and rattled off some post game talk as we went.

After the dust had settled I had a count of the VP up until that point...

Marines...

Wind Rider Host: 7VP
Swooping Hawks: 2VP
Swooping Hawks: 2VP
Objectives in Ruins (Errants): 5VP


Eldar...

Objectives x4: 20VP

Saim Hann Eldar: 20VP    Dark Angels: 16VP

Inconclusive Draw.

TheDracon did manage to kill more units than I did up to that point but I felt the Eldar were still in good shape. Looking at the pictures I recon the Eldar would have caused some serious carnage in the Advance Fire Phase while the remaining Close Combat at the hill would have been close. I feel the Assault Company would have broken this turn but who can say for sure... and I would have tried to rid myself of those pesky Warhounds and Errants too. However, the Dark Angels would still have had plenty to throw about too.



All round it was a very enjoyable game... and I hope for a rematch soon.

My own personal Observation on the Eldar v5 from this game:
Swooping Hawks are not worth 150 points and "Deep Strike"... although it suits the fluff, to a point, I didn't find it very appealing. I would rather not have it and pay less as it used to be. If I were to chose again I would take something else like Warp Spiders and Dire Avengers or two units of Banshee or Scorpions for the same points or a Wave Serpent/Aspect Combo as you had all advised prior to the game.

The Hawks got Deep Strike for free didn't they?  Pretty sure they were 150 before.  I tend to use them as chaperones for my Exarchs.....who never voluntarily go into Close Combat!  I have contemplated taking 3 squads of them in the Biel Tan Phoenix  host so they are less fragile, and deep strike the lot.  

Unfortunately, the Tau player nicked all my spares to use as Vespid.

v4 is 100 points with no deep strike... so deep strike cost 50 points.

Yeah, I thought about the same thing too. I wonder what Dire Avengers would be like?

I think against some armies the threat of a Deep Striking unit could be easily worth the points.  Against IG you'll force your opponent to devote combat power to protect his arty, and against Orks they will need to protect those pesky Soopa Guns etc.  Marines have less to fear given they have little in the way of unprotected support stuff, and they all have sufficient CAF to deal with the Hawks.  Yours seemed to tie up far more than their points worth of enemy troops.

What are your thoughts on the Knight host?  After playtesting them a couple of times I wondered whether it should have been made cheaper at all.

I still preferred the Hawks better when they were cheap (as before) but without Deep Strike... I wouldn't miss it as I'll never use it. There are better things in the Eldar Arsenal to do the other stuff you mentioned. In this game I messed up with my Hawks and they usually do better. I would have been best too have attacked Snap Fire units with the Hawks due to the additional -1 to hit but the game just didn't present the option... ...or I forgot... um, can't recall now.

The Knights... I had reduced the Hosts cost that our group uses to 850 points per company so I wont argue over semantics I feel they do require a decrease for Host Cards and that they work well and fit the army better because of it. Before the decrease they were too dear and arguably not as good IMO as a Tempests Host or two Falcon Hosts that could pop-up. I would have settled for an additional Command Knight at 900 points but that wouldn't be in keeping with the Eldar Cards. I feel the increase to Imperial Households is a mistake however.

I've still to dare to use my Eldar Knights in close combat... to be honest they look on paper to be way too fragile so I've been using them more as very mobile gun platforms. As you have seen in the two games they have only lost two Knights... both Bright Knights... I think the lack of casualties is more due to lack of any enemy barrage weapons.
