Hi,

I'm hoping to get a game this coming Thursday with TheDracon, yes pictures will be taken. I messed up last time when making my last Eldar List and although the army below is correct I still have little current experience with using the v5 lists. I would appreciate if you could have a look at my choice and comment on my selections, good, bad, why etc? All views welcome.

Morning Richard,

v5 is fine, no problem. I feel the same about just getting a game in too. I'm just having trouble understanding why they changed stuff that wasn't broken... IMO.

I was thinking... since I have a fair idea what you will be taking why don't I post my own choice to you so you also know my selection. That way the playing field is more even. How do the Eldar sound?

Cheers, Jim...

Sounds nice, but you are lacking transport for your aspects.

I would suggest taking one or 2 wave serpents detachments and send banshees or scorpions with them. Alternatively take one or two vampyres, proceed as above mentioned or 1 Wave serpent det and one vampyre. Then your aspects will be on the enemy "just in time"

And the wave attack is quite nice to disable a heavy shooter detachment of the enemy forces. Actually it has been the strongest eldar weapon i have seen so far in our games.

cheers

sanjuro

Ah, very true... but imagine two Aspects of Swooping Hawks, Deep strike? -1 to hit. Marvellous. I would prefer some better aspect but Swoops tick all the boxes in my book.

I love Wave Serpents but prefer to use them as artillery... I just can't help myself. The Vampire is awesome. Maybe I can convince TheDracon to extend the list by another 300 or so points, eh?  :vD

hmm, you can use wave serpents both as shooters and transports. But you are much more flexible when you have them loaded with CAF-monsters. Depending on the situation, you can either shoot the wave or drive through the enemy forces and dismbark for finishing them off. since aspect warriors form a detachment with the wave serpents, you can even embark and disembark in one turn.

I never understood why deep strike is so attractive to many players. The turn the units arrive, you can only gibe them advance orders, so only in the following turn after deep striking you can engage in close combat. Your swooping hawks will be dead by then most of the time. They seem to me be a nice additional unit to distract in a far away low action corner of the game, but they are certainly not mighty enough to seriously kick arse.

cheers sanjuro

I never really liked them. They cant charge the first turn so no CC against any barrage and they shoot really crappy. Guess they can be used to take and hold objectives.

On the turn they arrive the troops must be given Advance Orders and may be activated in both the Movement and Combat Phases of the turn they arrive.

Just my 2 cents.

Awe crud! I forgot "only Advance orders," good catch sanjuro.

Still 25cm base move with -1 to hit's not bad. I can reach a lot of stuff with that. If you get an Objective in a building say then a -3 to hit is a nightmare to dig out totally. He'll have to send in the troops and ok they are only +2 Caf, no great shakes for aspects but you can't have it all and don't you get Caf bonus' for being in a building now? +2 Caf IIRC, it's on a table chart near the structural integrity section...

Mobility is important due to no transports. Say, don't you need to keep transported troops with the wave serpents like a detachment anymore. That is how they used to work. If not then it is a worthy consideration for my list.

it's still like that. They form one detachment. my local eldar opponent always takes 2 detachments.
one loaded with CAF guys, the other for shooting. on top of that one or two vampyres with aspects. this combo really gives me a hard time...(playing marines)

Sorry, good catch Sanjuro and P-man.

I don't like being tied to the transported units as the same detachment. It's too limiting for me. I end up getting them into trouble... like close combat. A 4000 point battle doesn't provide as many targets either (it's a big gaming table they use at the GW store) so that also makes the Wave Serpent far less effective. You could use Hunters to fend off his Vampires... or at least give him concern. The Wave Serpents are difficult to counter... I'm not sure if I have ever managed one set let alone two.

However, normally I would have the Wave Serpent in just about any Host. Two if I could get away with it, but it is a bit much, even though it's perfectly legal.

You have to keep units with their own transports together..e.g Tac Marines with the included Rhinos (coherency).  If they are seperate formations/detachments like Aspects + Wave Serpents they don't need to stay together.

Wave Serpents are awesome but don't like Flyers

For the first question, it is an interesting list.  Bit top heavy with a Phantom, 2 Revenants and 10 Knights though.

Look forward to the report :)

Top heavy is a good thing though... it is Space Marines I'll be facing... probably backed by a couple of Warhounds and a Reaver with a Knight Errant Detachment or a Warlord... I need top heavy, real bad.  :))

So flyer vs. Wave Serpents... yeah, I see that would work... If you get past the Eldar air defence. Ouch!

Knowing my luck I'll blow my own Titans leg off or something.

Interestingly the smaller Vibro Cannon on the Unicorn and Infantry Support Platform all combine their attacks in a similar way AND increase the TSM by a further -1... but not the more powerful Tremor cannon Titan Weapon... Pity. You do get an automatic hit however. Yikes!

Yeah, I wish thee mucho success!

btw, the hunters are no big deal (as i always painfully find out on the marine side) as eldar, you can easily avoid them, giving their range of 50 cm when you fly high. And: when you are landing, you get a -1 (evasive pattern), so 3 hunters have 6 dice with 6+ and a 50 cm radius. It is the worst AA unit in the game.

@ Zap: This is true for wave serpents as well. quoting the eldar netepic codex:

The Wave Serpent can carry infantry 2 stands. When carrying troops the Wave Serpents must maintain
coherency as if it were a part of the infantry unit, in the fashion of other transport vehicles. The break points, morale
and victory points are still kept separate.

Hmm, I thought AA/Flak units negated the +25cm rule but I guess that is just wishful thinking.

Do Tarantulas work against Flyers?
