Full Scale Assaulted!

Well Full Scale Assault 09 is over for another year but what an event it was. 18 EPIC veterans battled for supremacy and there could only be one winner … yep you guessed it, David Thomas … well-done to him; looks like his 2009 season has started as well as his 2008 season. Also big congratulations to Alan Saunders for winning the most important award … best sportsman; this award makes Alan a really smashing chap to play against … especially when he puts his Reaver titan into assault range against a Warlock titan… maybe next time Alan  :).

There were other individuals who deserved a mention; firstly a special mention has to go to Kevin Bott for one of the best painted EPIC armies I’ve ever seen. Kevin had converted his own Sisters of Battle (its 6mm toys!!!) and purchased some Forge World Grey Knights to make a beautiful Space Marine army. Unfortunately I didn’t manage to get any pics as I was far too busy. Another special mention has to go to Ryan Downes for his beautiful Crimson Fists (he had even modelled assault cannons on his 6mm terminators … it’s just wrong!).

Going back to positions it was nice to see Tim Hunt back on top of his game coming second; Tim had an ‘eventful’ 2008 season but it looks like 2009 will provide more trophies (a definite candidate for your ‘fantasy EPIC’ team in the future). Matt Arnold rounded off the top three with an impressive 3rd place (it was even more impressive because I didn’t think he would finish a single game  :) ).

So onto the final positions:

1st David Thomas – Space Marines
2nd Tim Hunt – Eldar
3rd Matt Arnold – Imperial Guard
4th Nathan Hoole – Space Marines
5th Mark Hargrave – Chaos
6th Kevin Bott – Space Marines – Players best painted
7th Joe Jephson – White Scars
8th Mark Preston – Space Marines
9th David Bartley – Space Marines
10th Mark Williams – Imperial Guard
11th Alan Saunders – Space Marines – Most Sporting
12th Steve Gullick – Eldar
13th Steve Plenderlieth – Imperial Guard
14th Nick Rice – Space Marines
15th Gavin Mckenzie – Eldar
16th Damian Bradley – Imperial Guard
17th Russel Burton – Imperial Guard
18th Ryan Downes – Space Marines – Wooden spoon, Dice of Dave and Judges best painted

Below are some pics of the event (if anyone would like a picture removed please email me with details of which one and I’ll take it off this post)

Smashing

Full Scale Assault in full swing!

Killer move

Joe moving in for the kill

The Lesser-spotted Hooster

Rarely fills out entry forms or sends in army lists; also another trait of a Hooster is to pay for a tournament at the last possible moment ... however the most frightening aspect of all is its grin!

Spotted!

Damn ... spotted, run away!

Speed Reading

Mark has learnt the ancient art of speed reading a book within 30 seconds ... unfortunately it still didn't help

ZzzZZzzz

Matt Just about to nod off, and why not!

Measuring

Dave is measuring something ... but what? Answers on a postcard

Moving without seeing

So skilled is Damian that he can move units into the correct position without actually looking ... or maybe that's why he came 3rd from bottom?

Mince Pies

For winning the EPIC Championship last year Dave received 8 Sommerfield Deep filled mince pies ... however some members of the tournament scene who shall remain nameless (Joe, David, Steve) thought that this was a bit on the tight side. So I gave into pressure and bought a EPIC UK Championship shield and presented it to Dave at this tournament

Nice Chap!

Alan won best sportsman making him the nicest chap at the tournament ... and doesn't he look pleased!

Painting God

Kevin and his players choice painting award for his superb Sisters of Battle ... Grey Knights ... Space Marine army thing ... well it made sense if you were at the tournament.

Painting God no. 2

Ryan collecting his judges best painted award

Him again!

Ryan collecting his wooden spoon and the (enter a voice like Brian Blessed but without the shouting)DICE OF DAVE voucher (finish a voice like Brian Blessed but without the shouting). It's terrible, taking all the awards ... he should of done the decent thing and let someone else come last  :)

3rd Place

After his short kip Matt picks up 3rd

He's Back!

The Timster picks up 2nd

1st ... AGAIN!!!

Some say, that he wins EPIC tournaments within the UK and that ... they would be right!

Thanks to Matt for running another fun, smooth event.

Now if I can find a way to make some armour saves (reinforced or not) I may stand a chance in some games!

Hope to see more people at OW11 (Well 2 more so we fill the 20 slots!).

Great event as always, and many thanks to Kev, Dave and Mark for enjoyable games, marred only slightly by my almost total lack of sleep and a 2.5 hour trip up the M1.

Looking forward to Open War XI on April 25th

I had the shield engraved as you said, but as the engraver was having a special offer (3 for the price of 2) I had 2009 and 2010 engraved to save me money over the next 2  years

Well another great days gaming with 3 fun games.

My list was

Tactical + Supreme Commander + Hunter + Lascannon Razorback (BTS)
Devastators
Assault Marines + Chaplain
Terminators
Terminators
Scouts + Lascannon Razorback
Whirlwinds
Landspeeders
Thunderhawk
Thunderhawk
Thunderbolts
Thunderbolts

Game 1 - Mark Preston - Marines.

Marks army was built around a warlord and one air assault. This game was extremely bloody. My terminators couldn't make a save, my assault marines impaled themselves against Marks assault marines when they were in a great position to get support fire from the Devs. The warlord only managed to hit twice in four turns with its volcano cannon. At the end of the game I had 1 terminator unit, 2 thunderhawks, 3 thunderbots and some broken devs! Mark had his warlord and his tactical unit.

So a losing draw in 4 turns.

Game 2 - Gavin McKenzie - Eldar

I had played Gavin a couple of weeks ago with both of us using our tournament armies for a quick warm up game. In that game Gavin had managed to get a wining draw.
This time I switched up my tactics and played corners. Gavin made a minor error in objective placement and all 4 take and hold objects were sat in the third nearest my deployment corner. Gavin then setup in a castle right in the point of his corner. This meant that his artillery was too far away to be really effective and all his forces were further away from claiming any objective. The game was a very cagey affair with Gavin unwilling to come forward too far and split his force and my air assault terminators held off by capping nightwings. As it turned out I didn't need the terminators and took the game 2-0 in 3 turns (Hold the line, they shall not pass).

Game 3 - Nathan Hoole - Marines.

I've never beaten Nathan, and this game didn't change that! I was on the back foot from the start and never really got a hold in the game. Nathan totally outplayed me and deserved his 3-0 win the 3 turns.

So with one win, one draw and one loss I finished up in 9th place and just missed out on a championship point!

Great day of gaming overall.

Or you could of put each letter of your name on each of the shields leaving only one free  :)

Like Tim says, you need to watch your back this year ... people will be gunning for that shield.

I'll try to do better next time ;-)
Man, Kev's army was amazing wasn't it? Great to see in the flesh; needless to say it's only spurred me on with my next project in which i'd like to attempt to match his skill; this is unlikely however!
Thanks Matt for running an ace event, Alan for a chilled out marine slapsy contest, Mark for inspiring my army list for OW11, and Rug for a grudge match in which i was firmly trounced!
Well, i'd best get back to painting; i'm almost glad to see that back of those damned marines!

Thanks to Matt for a great tournament run in a very professional manner.

Thanks also to my opponents for three very tough games! Epic tournaments are becoming a bit like the Premier League - there are no easy games!
