Hahaha, I'm old enough to remember the phantom and his role as one of the defenders of the earth.

Quality stuff.  Didn't he have the strength of 10 tigers?

So am I, but do you remember the theme tune?  I'm one of these people who can remember (and sing the lyrics to) loads of different programmes from my childhood, but I think I'll stop there, before I embarrass myself any more....

What are we meant to be discussing?  Oh yes, Phantom Titans.

It's interesting that my old Phantom Titan in the Space Marine era used to have a pretty good reputation for killing enemy Titans (the Heat Lance was an evil weapon at medium and short range), but I agree that it seems to be easier to get it to kill tough targets now than it was before, although I don't think mine has performed as well on the field of battle as it should do when looking at its performance on paper.

Argh!

Super Phantom was finally smoked last night.  :sigh:   He went out scarface style though, gunned down over 2 turns by a 925 pt Warlord titan.  Before going however he managed to bag a Warhound, a shot from it's pulsar sending it's reactor critical and a reaver - broken in FF then hunted down relentlessly over three turns and finally crushed to scrap by the Phantom's powerfist.

That takes his finally engine kill tally to:

Warlord,
2 x Reaver
3 x Warhounds,
Ravager.

The crew's names have gone down on the craftworld's roll of honour.  :vD

he he i have to add to this after my first eldar game yesterday i over 7 yrs, and my one and only phantom popped 3 steam gargants like ducks in a  barrel. lol fun times and possiably the easiest BTS i have ever achived. and the irony is these gargants give my marines total headaches and problems yet the phantom dispatched of them like a fat kid would dispatched 3 icecreams on a hot day.

good times had by all.

For me personally i would choose the fist every time.  I tried the twin pulsars for a while but it just seemed to lack Oomff.  Eldar battle (As opposed to scout)titans are best when up close and getting stuck in, launching assaults or preparing engagements with firepower and getting into a position to lend supporting fire.  It's also how you really get their points worth, as you get multiple uses per turn from your titans.

E.g a recent game i had, saw a Phantom titan engage a large squat brotherhood and break them after having killed a good few, then using his hit and run ability to move to within 15 cm of 2 other large enemy units.  Retaining and engaging the first of the 2 with a unit of aspects the phantom got to lend 9 x 3+ supporting fire attacks, again breaking and severly mauling the fm, the aspects consolidated to within supporting fire range of the third enemy fm who were then promptly engaged using my second retain and were wiped out - again, the Phantom's 9x 3+ FF attacks contributed greatly.  So in 1 turn the Phantom proved to be worth it's 750 pts adding massively to the engagement power of the eldar.  Admittedly, opportunities like the one above don't happen every game but the Phantom/Warlock gives you the option and you should always be looking one step ahead to what the titan's going to do after it's initial engagement and get multiple uses from it.  You just don't get that when you put your titan into a fire support role with twin pulsars.

The super Phantom didn't start racking up the serious engine kills and becoming a real killer till i moved over to the powerfist.

Since i've bugger all else to do at the minute i think i'd like to share another Phantom related anecdote:

The game was a 3000pt battle between Biel Tann Eldar and AMTL.  The board featured a very dense city scape in the centre of the board with more open countryside surrounding it.  3 of the objectives were within this city area - which was perfect Phantom, stalking territory.

My opponent sent his warhounds round the flanks to harass any eldar units lingering on the fringes and looking to make a break for the blitz.  Realising the tactical importance and yet the danger of the city he sent in his BTS - a warlord titan and an assault reaver (Volcano cannon, gatling blaster, Apocalypse missile launcher) to hunt down the elusive Eldar monstrosity.  Each titan was kept within supporting fire of the other.

Using the skyscrapers, ruined buildings and refineries the Phantom made his stalk on the hunters, carefully avoiding ending his turn in the front fire arc of the leapfrogging/ overwatching imperial titans.  Finally in a position to strike the Phantom pounced from behind a block of tenemants, avoiding the front fire arc of the overwatching titans straight at the Warlord titan.  The Phantom ripped it's guts out, bypassing it's shields and ramming it's powerfist deep into the heart of the machine, causing 6 damage points and 3 criticals.  The reaver's supporting fire was inneffective against it's shimmering holofields.  Leaving the striken Warlord the Phantom retreated back to it's hiding place.  Desperately fighting fires and trying to stem the massive damage done to their god machine the tech priests of the Warlord were unable to stem the flow of superheated plasma and it's reactor went critical showering the mighty machine over a large area.

The Reaver attempted to avenge it's fallen comrade with it's arsenal of weaponry but a combination of cover and the shifting dancing holofields of the graceful eldar war machine thwarted it's efforts.  The Phantom responded by rushing the reaver and again pounding it with it's powerfist, causing 4 damage and recieving 2 in reply, breaking the reaver and sending it fleeing, broken and dishonoured.

Brutal good game, some amazing holofield saves on my part but just goes to show, what a Phantom titan in deep cover is capable of doing when it gets up close and personal.  I always remember this game with much fondness.   :vD

If you're going for the fist then the Warlock has the edge in that close support combat role for not a lot more points.

True that but at lower points levels the Phantom is a great choice and still allows you some aircraft to play with.

For me, the Phantom is a good all rounder because it has the ability to put long range, high powered shots downrange in the early turns of the game and also because at 3000pts i can field one as well as a Vampire.

Now, at 4000 pts it's a different story altogether.   :vD
