Ok, folks just to make this clear. In no way do I want to seem like I am unappreciative of the hard work that has gone into these lists.
However, I have been asked to provide some insight into what
I dislike about them in the hopes of understanding my concerns... or maybe to poke holes in my reasons and destroy my credibility in the eyes of you the reader... (Ah, so that's where my paronia got to) ...here goes, I'll try not to be my usual sarcastic self... well, I said I would try but there is no hope of me succeeding.
Oh... and why am I having a go at Chaos?.. Well it is the list that has annoyed me most but it is not the only one.
The Standard Chaos Company Cards... Why are they composed as they are?
Ok, in the old SM rules you were allowed to take Imperial units up to half your points of ANY standard Imperial Guard unit. When the v4 Cultist rules and list came out I very much preferred it and still used it a lot. It has since been replaced with this.
Chaos Renegades... Surely these should be Chaos Marines unaffiliated and with no special Chaos Legion Powers. Instead you get only one detachment and a detachment of Beastmen and Cultists each. Why?.. If it's to make it look different then what has that to do with game balance. Perhaps if I wanted Beastmen or Cultists I can take a Company of them, but no...
Cultist Company/Army... not three detachments, oh no. Only two... more colour? Is it to show that a loyalist company has just joined Chaos and killed the other detachment?.. Again, what has this to do with game balance?.. Perhaps it is so you can afford more company cards... don't you get a Chaos Reward Card for each one of these?.. That may be unbalanced when used with Greater Daemons.
Beastman Horde... same as above but you also get a detachment of Ogryn Mercs... why?.. It just doesn't seem right to me.
If I want Renegade Marines/Cultists or Beastmen, allow me to buy them. If I want to add extras I will.
Daemon Horde... Daemon Horde?.. with no Daemons?.. It used to be the Monster Horde, that made sense. It used to be great and a must buy. Two warbands of Minotaurs and one of Trolls... not any more though. Again only one of each, the other got chucked. I've played against this one almost every time I fight against Chaos. It isn't unbalanced IMO. Some may forget to take any of the REAL Daemons but I always think they are a poor replacement and a wise Chaos player will come around to thinking that too after a few games. I would still take them though. I like loads of stuff on the table. I'm simple and uncomplicated that way.
Chaos Champion... I love this guy... if it wasn't for the fact that every other Champ got it in the neck so he could exists. I want my Aspiring Champs to have Daemon Weapons better than a Laspistol.
Renegade Psykers... grouped together is weird to me. It's like a gaming club of power gamers gone wrong. Why would they team up? Is it like a gang?
Slaves... again another weird special. Shouldn't this be in the support section? Chaos Cultists and Slaves go hand in hand.
Ok, they can get a Warhound Titan Pack or Reaver Titan... but not a Warlord?..
Chaos Spawn... why a special card? They aren't that good. Stick something good in the specials... like a Leviathan or something.
Phantom Engine... I can't hold back the sarcasm here. What was being smoked the night this was introduced AND implemented. Perhaps it is only the description that turns me off this unit as I like the rules but really... Tollbooth? Oh come on! Next there will be a Watchdog and a small child going to a land of letters and numbers... (reference to a childhood book I vaguely remember and think it had ??tollbooth?? in the title.) If you want the cultists to have light artillery why not allow them to have knocked it off their loyalist mates?..
Chaos Space Marines... 200 points! Too good where they?
Chaos Squats... used to be a warband with a Champion. The Champ buggered off but the price increased...
Chaos Veterans... 200 points is ok but only Infiltrate. +4 Caf would have been nice.
Chaos Marine Bikes... same as the Loyalist Marines. +2 Caf... same problem as Loyalist Marine Bikes. These should be 3+ Caf as they used to be. They are Assault oriented IMO. Attack Bikes should not be +3 Caf they are support weapon platforms not unlike Vyper Jetbikes. Given them both PD and leave normal Marine or CSM Bikes at 3+ Caf.
Cultist Riders... five in a squad?.. If you want to play a Cultist only force these would help if they were the normal ten per squad.
...and then we have the Legions...
Worldeaters... If I want to use Khorne Berserkers I should be allowed to put them in the army for myself. Not forced to take them by including them in the Legion. The Chaos Legion Card is messed up now as the Berserkers kind of do the same thing already.
This is the same for the Thousand Sons. Automatons... because they are in the Legion with no choice you may now only use two detachments or the champ to cast the Legion Card IIRC. The Automatons should have Point Defence too.
Warp Vortex... Huh? Reminds me of an old childrens program about problem solving.
http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?....rl=httpEmperors Children... same as above in that if I want them I would prefer to buy them and keep the Legions for Chaos Marines. This one doesn't cause too many problems though as they can all use the Legion Card.
Deathguard... Confused me at first this one. 3+ save for Plague Marines. Can any Deathguard Marine be a Plague Marine... Terminators, Bikes etc... hmm, if not then it's a pity.
Given the choice I would still prefer to pay 450 points for a Chaos Legion (600 points now and most of them aren't as good for the reasons I have made above) and buy the other stuff if I wanted.
Ok, I'm stopping here as I'm tired and this should be plenty for now. This is just the standard stuff really. I haven't even touched the Codex Chaos Legion List. Do you really want me to go on. Most of the other races lists are like this for me too.
