Great, so you are moving to hidden development. That's not fixing "glaring errors" but designing new rules.

Hena, I think your comment is overly pessimistic. The suggestions that were forwarded have all been mentioned on this forum over it's history and most fairly recently on these boards by you guys. So the fact that they (the reviewers) are bringing up things that we have all discussed before, but not acted on is not secret development.

If there was one overlying theme in all the comments, it was to focus the list. Just recently Chroma took a gallant stab at that with his "Alternative Approach". That the reviewers as a group also have suggested, and mind you only suggested, that the list become more focused, indicates that this is an issue and I would not be doing my job if
I just ignored the comments.

If CS and I believe that it is in the best interest of the list to listen to these outside voices, then we will find a way to implement those recommendations for the
benefit of the list.

My goal is not to put together something that keeps 3-4 people happy. My goal is to get a list prepared for general testing, which includes tournament play. The Tau list has been approached by the community like a "hobby", dabbling when they see fit, not really concerned as to the outcome. Whereas I am approaching this as if Tau list is intended for commercial use by a large interested population.

I understand if the way I am addressing this project frustrates you. I am convinced that this is the way to get to where we want to be, which is a strong, balanced list that is respected by the community.

Your patience is greatly appreciated.

The idea of a smaller group for reviewing is a good one, using an open forum as a peer reviewer is that you get all sorts of numpties prepared to make a scene over one thing that they want done their way.

At the end of the day the theory is to produce a fair Tau list, producing an overpowered list is against the whole point since it would never be accepted by the community and I'm sure a lot of players are iching to take Tau to events and tournaments. Which is of course the point.

From the initial feedback it sounds promising that theres some cutbacks for the Keep It Simple Stupid theory of list writing, when an army can't take the field without dozens of bespoke special rules comming out of its ears its a bad sign.

It is also worth noting that it is not the 'hidden' aspect that is important here (to me), but the 'outside' aspect. These additional reviewers represent people who do not post on these boards, but are likely to play against the Tau in the future. It is vital that we get the opinions of people who are not 'core players' as well as you guys (and I fully acknowledge that critical role that you guys play in this). Also, even if suggestions are acted on from these additional commenters, they will appear in the next version and everyone will have the opportunity to discuss them. The next version will not be written in stone and things will not be fixed as a result of this without giving all of the members here a chance to voice their opinion.

If this pushes us out of the development 'valley' that we have been in for a while, I welcome it.

A point well made Hena, I can understand the frustration of having the latest version witheld from those who have contributed to its design.

However, IMHO the Tau list has been plagued by people trying to make it fit particular perspectives, often based on 'fluff' or play styles, which has resulted in the design going in circles for a long time as these views got more and more entrenched.

If putting the list in front of fresh eyes gets the list moving forwards, then I for one am all for it :agree: . You (and I) will get our turn analysing the proposals in time. It sounds as though that may be a few days or even a week or two. But I am sure it will happen.

As my father used to say

    Virtue is a Grace;
Grace was a little girl who never washed her face"

And how many flavours of linux are there Hena? By that token you should have no problem with everyone going there own way from the central core, just like linux?

Looking forward to this release.

I've stopped painting my Tau for the moment in case there's any variations in formation size/composition.

Thanks for all the hard work, gents!

In defense of Honda/CS I'd like to add that I prefer working on a set of rules, supplement, whatever with a few select people. Then release it and then gather feedbacl from everyone and distill that info to make it even better.

The more people the less liklier it is something gets done.

This Tau list is ofcourse done and feedback is gathered but seen the special circumstances (aka what the heck is going on) I can see their purpose and goal.

I also prefer to have a non-involved set of eyes on a paper.

I was an admin guy for years in the Navy, and one thing we ALWAYS did was have someone other than the guy who wrote the document proofread it (even the monster 750-page instructions that I had to proof).  To this day, no paper I write for college gets to the professor without someone else's eyes on it for proofing.

Let's face it, we all have our 'grudgestones' (entrenched positions) on this list.  We need to break the impasse we've been in for the better part of a year now.  If having a group outside the forums proofread and comment, not repeat NOT playtest gets us there, all the better.

(Interesting that one comment has been to focus the list.)

Honda/CS, I assume that there will be an 'issue' or 'proofreaders comments' sheet posted with the V4.5/V5 list?

I'm pretty sure Honda said the commentary would be summarised and published.

Reminds me of the quote from Douglas Adams (The Restaurant at the End of the Universe) about large social groups taking longer than small ones to figure things out - The 'how, why and where' phases.

"How are we doing? - Badly.
Where are we going? - Don't know.
Why not? - Shut up!"
:vD

Take your time guys  :agree: .

Steve.

I prefer to think of it as...

The Committee for the Liberation and Integration of Terrifying Organisms and their Rehabilitation Into Society

...because no one really knows anything about it (the testing that is...)  :))

Lister: Your explanation for anything slightly peculiar is aliens, isn't it? You lose your keys, it's aliens. A picture falls off the wall, it's aliens. That time we used up a whole bog roll in a day, you thought that was aliens as well.

Rimmer: Well we didn't use it all, Lister. Who did?

Lister: Rimmer, ALIENS used our bog roll?

Rimmer: Just cause they're aliens doesn't mean to say they don't have to visit the little boys' room. Only they probably do something weird and alien-esque, like it comes out of the top of their heads or something.

Lister: Well I wouldn't like to be stuck behind one in a cinema.
