Tried using the macro setting... it did turn out a bit better, but should probably be done in daylight. However in this godforsaken part of the world, we dont get much of that at this time of year!

Yeah we suffer the same problem with sunlight here too. Still, it might need some light but you can make out more details in the model. Have you tried taking the picture with flash but at an arms distance from the model. I found that helps with the flash drowning the model with light. You can always crop the image to bring it forward.

Phantom is painted to acceptable standard. Later (=when the rest of the army is done) I may add more highlights and detail.

Yeah, very nice. You get very clear/clean end result that make it look right. Mine are messy because I don't take the time but you obviously do.
