Hm.  I'm not fond of the old Magnus mini myself, but I'm not happy with the illustrations, either.  It looks like they went a bit overboard on the Egyptian imagery with pre-heresy Magnus.  Upper armour in particular looks at odds with the powered-armour legs, and the horns on the shoulder pads look weird.  Traitor Magnus looks better (partly because I prefer the style to the photoshop effect), but the horns are even weirder!  What happens if he wants to reach forward?

Oh, and great work, RS. :D  Great vivid red and frighteningly neat details.  Excellent jetbike conversions!

To Sorcerer: I havent read the book, but I was thinking of using at least some gold on the legio mortis - black, dark red, bone white and gold is an effective colour scheme, typically for fantasy undead, and that's what I had in mind. I havent come very far yet, but here's a pic anyway, you'll get the idea (I've only primed the Titan so far):

@Vermis: Cheers! I agree the horns on both versions are a little OTT, but otherwise I quite like the pre-heresy version. I've seen someone do a Peturabo conversion using one of the old plastic robots (I think it was on this forum, but have no idea who did it unfortunately) which seems like a good start in terms of size for a Primarch, particularlt one of the more 'bulky' ones like Magnus - I couldn't see it working for Sanguinius for example - so if I ever get round to attempting it thats probably where I'll start.

@B-CP: I see you're going for the old-school look for your Sons of Horus rather than the grey-green of the more recent background! I love the Legion symbol on the vehicles, very well done.

Updates! Finally.

The latest addition consists of my Supreme Commander's detatchment. I decided to attempt a pre-heresy Arhiman conversion for this guy, basing him on the artwork below:

Obviously I wasn't going to be able to recreate it perfectly, but I identified certain elements that I could copy - halberd-like weapon with a curved blade, enclosed helm with a golden faceplate, cream robes. I used the Chaos Sorcerer as a base as it was pretty close to what I was after already, trimmed the crest of the helmet down, and removed the top of the staff and replaced it with a curved blade from an old Beastman mini. His bodyguard also have similar helmets, so rather than use standard marines I used some of the old Chaos marines with their crests removed - the chaos warrior style helmets look pretty similar to the helmets of the squad in the picture. Finally, the command squad have gold trims rather than white in order to make them stand out from the regular marines. The rhino for the command squad also has a bit of added gold decoration, and I used a scarab design to designate the command squad to tie in with the pre-heresy iconography of the Thousand Sons.

Pictures aren't particularly good - I'll try and get some better ones eventually. Anyway, here's Arhiman and his command squad:

The whole tactical detatchment:

And the Rhinos:

Very nice indeed. I'm impressed that they haven't ended up looking Blood Angle like. Yes, very very nice.

Very cool and very well done.

Where to people find these images from the 40K card game?  They often make excellent references.

@silentbob: Thanks!

@Warhead: The white rims on the pads go a long way to differentiate them from the BA... apart from Sanguinary Priests the BA don't seem to use white much, so it helps show my guys are from another Legion.

@Cuban Commissar:here you go. Those are the Horus Heresy ones... it doesn't have all of them, but is still a useful reference for pre-heresy stuff.

Also the horus heresy: collected visions art book has all of the card game images but mostly uncropped and much larger.

Yeah the Collected Visions book has pretty much been my bible for getting the pre-heresy look right. Expensive though - unless you manage to pick one up for about a tenner off ebay  ( /smug  :laugh:  )

Rightyho, back from the holidays and managed to get some work done on the TS. First off, a detatchment of Whirlwinds, to provide some long range artillery to support the infantry:

Next up, a couple of Hunters to provide anti-aircraft support. Minor conversion here, Hunter turrets from the current Epic Whirlwind models (sourced via ebay) added to the older chassis:

Next up, a detatchment of Land Speeders. Took me a while to get hold of these, but ebay came through eventually - I now have several detatchments of them. Really like the models, lots of detail for the size...

And finally, seeing as the force is beggining to reach a respectable size (a full battle company plus various support elements) I figure its probably time for an army picture!

I still need to settle down to a big basing session some time and finish off the bases, but I'm quite happy with the fact the army is beginning to get to a decent size. Next up I have started work on a Legio Tempestor Reaver Titan...

Looking good; will you be painting any larger models in epic scale at all? I'd love to see you turn yr hand to a titan or two!

@Malakai: Cheers! I'm actually impressed with how quickly I'm getting this done (for me, that is). I'd probably have painted about 5 minis for a Warhammer army in this time, and here I am with around 2000 points painted! Of course, signing up for the Tale of 40K painters on Warseer helps as well, gives me the kick in the arse I sometimes need to knuckle down and finish stuff off.

@frogbear: Don't worry, this thread will be going for a while. Still plenty of stuff to add to the force...

@Man of Kent:
Next up I have started work on a Legio Tempestor Reaver Titan...

So yes!  :yes: There will be a couple of Forgeworld Thuderhawks as well. For the Titans I am adopting the old Storm Lords colour scheme, making it a solid blue with gold edging rather than the blue/grey pattern seen here:

The idea is to have the Titans largely mirror the eventual Legion colours of the Thousand Sons themselves as a nod to their history after the Heresy, plus the older background suggests the Storm Lords eventually dedicated themselves to Tzeench - another tie in with the fate of the TS. I figure modifying the scheme doesn't really deviate from my quest for background purity - my rationalisation is that the Storm Lords were originally blue/gold and modified their colours when they turned Traitor.
