The Badab War was one of the more serious rebellions in recent Imperial history, involving several Chapters. Badab is a planet in the Ultima Segmentum, close to the border with the Segmentum Solar.

Badab's planetary governor and Master of the Astral Claws chapter was Lufgt Huron, known as the "Tyrant of Badab" in Imperial histories. The Mechanicus had long complained of the Chapter's tardiness in submitting the standard 5% gene-seed. The Astral Claws had as well amassed a huge debt in planetary tithes going back over a hundred and fifty years. In response to this, in 901.M41, an Imperial investigation fleet arrived within Badab's orbit. Almost immediately, a massive attack destroyed the fleet, the weapons fire coming from the planet.

This was Huron's first overt act of treason. Imperial records state that Huron was a power hungry and ambitious leader who never should have come to power within a Space Marine chapter. He was able in many respects, but lacked the absolute dedication to humanity vital in a Imperial leader. Imperial officials have suggested that Huron may have actually been an alien shapechanger, or that a sudden manifestation of psychic mutation was the cause of his treachery.

In 903, three other chapters had aligned themselves with the rebel Astral Claws. The Mantis Warriors, Executioners and Lamenters, along with the Astral Claws, attacked Imperial shipping across the sector. The Fire Hawks became involved when one of their ships was captured by the Mantis Warriors in 904; the Fire Hawks immediately retaliated, making the total involved chapters five.

To aid the Fire Hawks and bring an end to this insurrection, the Emperor recalled the Marines Errant from the Eastern Fringe; they found themselves occupied in protecting Imperial shipping, not able to aid in an offensive on Badab.

In 906, two more Space Marine chapters joined the battle, the Red Scorpions and Minotaurs, and the threat to Imperial shipping was almost eradicated.

In 907, the Red Scorpions and Fire Hawks returned to their duties in the galactic east, and the Novamarines and Howling Griffons were brought in take their places.

The Star Phantoms were given the task of besieging Badab, and two other chapters were sent to investigate the Mantis Warriors' and Executioners' home worlds. The Lamenters were caught in an ambush by the Minotaurs in 908 and eventually surrendered after bloody ship-to-ship fighting. After this, the majority of battles were sieges, leading to the eventual downfall of the Tyrant in 912 with the fall of Badab and final defeat of the Astral Claws.

Before the war was over, the Exorcists, Fire Angels, Salamanders, Space Sharks and Sons of Medusa were all involved in some way, replacing other chapters as they were needed in different sectors of the galaxy.

When the rebellion was defeated, the Mantis Warriors, Executioners and Lamenters were given the Emperor's forgiveness and reinstated as loyal Space Marines chapters, and subject to a 100 year crusade. The homeworlds of the Mantis Warriors and Executioners were forfeited to the Space Sharks and Star Phantoms for their vital roles in the war and the other chapters received salvage rights to the spacecraft as well as a share of the booty.

Astral Claws were all but destroyed. Only a contingent of about two hundred managed to fight their way through a blockage by the Exorcists and escape into deep space, taking refuge in the Maelstrom. Lugft Huron was one of the survivors. The Astral Claws changed their name to the Red Corsairs, becoming a pirate group, and Huron adopted the title "Blackheart".

Ever since the Rogue Trader compendium I was drawn into this glossed over conflict in the 40k universe.
I'm not sure if GW has expanded on it at all. I saw they had an even that ran a few years ago, but thats neither here nor there.

My goal is to create 2 armies for this period.
A traitor Marine force made using the normal Space Marine army list and a Loyalist Marine army.
Each force would have assets from the various chapters that participate in the campaign and the seige of Badab.

UP first are the traitors!! Booo hisssss!!
The bulk of the army will be made up of the "Mantis Warriors" chapter of marines.
I took some liberties with their colours and added yellow for highlights and veteran markings. Plain green seemed too "dark angels" for me.

Here is the army so far. Right now its just above 2k.

The "Executioner's" chapter has lent a formation of Terminators to the Mantis Warriors.

And the ones that started the Rebellion. The "Astral Claws"(Tiger Claws). Hopefully they dont look TOO much like Tony the Tiger ;).
I'm still unsure if I'm happy the way they turned out.

I think I have shakey camera work because they really dont look THAT bad in person. I think they look pretty crisp.

On the paint bench:
-Formation of Devastators. (Mantis Warriors)
-3 Razorbacks (Mantis Warriors)
-Formation of Landspeeders (Mantis Warriors)
-Formation of Land Raiders (Mantis Warriors)
-Formation of Assault Marines (Astral Claws)*Yay I get to go blind again doing those stripes*

The Loyalists will be from the "Space Sharks", "Minotaurs" and "Fire Angels" Marine chapters.

Nice! I had worked out my own stats for Blackheart and the Red Corsairs in NetEpic but have never tried them... yet.
Your Army looks great!.. and that's not a Tony the tiger dig.

Any background on the Executioners? I need a reminder or something as I don't know 'em. Sound interestingly gruesome though.

Good luck with the project.

Beautiful work on the mini's.  And they don't look like Tony the Tiger so don't worry.

The Executioners are a Space Marine Chapter who sided with the Lufgt Huron during the Badab Uprising. With Huron's defeat, they were granted the Emperor's forgiveness, subject to undertaking a 100 year crusade, and forfeiting their homeworld to one of the loyalist chapters of the Badab War. During the Badab War, the Executioners had, for unknown reasons, sided with the Astral Claws; along with the Mantis Warriors, and the Lamenters.

The Executioners Chapter was created in a Founding during 598.M35, created to help relieve the White Scars in monitoring and countering the many threats taking refuge within the Maelstrom. The gene-seed of the Executioners is seemingly derived from the Blood Angels. The main evidence of this is their Chapter organisation and unit markings which are the exact same as the Blood Angels Chapter and their successors.

The Executioner's designate different squad types by shoulder plate colour: Red for Scouts, purple for Devastators, yellow for Assault, and green for Tactical Squads.

I mainly chose them because I wanted the challenge of doing 3 colour camo on stupid small sized minis.

I thought doing german pea dot in FOW was a pain on the eyes. sheesh.

Regarding blackheart, I'm not sure what stats they gave him for 40k, but I kind of see him as someone that convinces others to do the job for him.
How else could he SOMEHOW convince 3 loyal marine chapters to aid him in his rebellion?
I'm not sure if this is explained at all by GW. It seems to be left fairly vague.
Usually GW uses the chaos card for rebellions, but this one doesn't seem to ahve any chaos taint on it.

The conflict started in 901 M41 and ended in 912 M41. A conflict that lasted over a decade between roughly 10 Marine chapters.
Not a small feat for sure heh.

Maybe I'll toss some lists around and see if I can pull together a Badab campaign folder.
I'm sure that planetary militias and ImpG were involved so it seems like an interesting setting with unique restrictions and allowances.

The Badab conflict probably escalated due to the fact that Huron managed to get support from other Chapters because he was "fighting against the oppression from the High Lords and protecting the Space Marines' autonomy" or something like that. I always liked the idea that Huron rebelled because of his own megalomania and belief that Space Marines should rule, not so much because he was secretly worshipping Chaos all along...

Where are the Lamenters by the way?

I remember the "Badab craze" over at Warseer where a bunch of people each started their own little Badab War Projects. Hopefully we will see something similar in Epic scale over here! :D
