Leave the support craft rule
Reduce the range to 50cm on the Moray's railcannons (yes, 50. Don't get all wound up over it 8v) )
Reduce the range to 45cm on the Hvy Ion Phalanx
Reduce Tracer Missile ranges to 60cm
Change deflector rule to save only on a 4+ vs. TK weapons.
Adjust price accordingly, if needed at all.  IMO it won't need on after this.

Ok.

Leave the Support Craft rule alone.
Keep 2 Railcannons & reduce the range to 50cm on them (Good call Mosc).
Reduce the range to 45cm on the Hvy Ion Phalanx.
Keep Tracer Missiles at 75cm.
Change deflector rule to 5+ Inv Save (as per TRC's idea).
Adjust points if needed.

zombocom - I'm not trying to win you or anyone else over. Just passing on my point of view as a bloke with well over 7000pts worth of Tau and several dozen games played using them.

*Edit - Lose Self Planetfall from the Manta.

Ok, my 2 pence:-

Leave support craft alone (with misgivings*)
Reduce Rail cannons and Tracer missiles to 50cm both with Markerlight*
Reduce Ion Phalanx to 45 cms
Change deflectors to 5+ (per TRC)
Allow planetfall (but not self-planetfall)

Cost ~350 (in line with Warhound and Feral) as it has similar durability, but is less assaultable and has more deployment options

======================================

*Support Craft
I remain unconvinced about this rule and tend to prefer 'Skimmer' instead.

*Markerlight
  • Rail Guns and all missiles are reduced to maximum range 50 cms or less, but gain Markerlight.
  • Weapons guided by Markerlight gain 50% range (so here, these weapons will hit markerlit enemy units at 75 cms).
  • Only Tau Drones and Robot Sentry Turrets have markerlight to 'paint' all enemy units in LoS within 30cms, provided their formation is not broken. Markelight is also suppressed by BMs.
  • Robot Sentry Turrets gain scout, Jump pack and Fearless, but otherwise are deployed like other formations.
  • Sentries and Drones can be transported by relevant A/c and vehicles (Pathfinder, Pirhana and Tigershark), and may use markerlight while being transported.

[Assuming Manta gets weapon reduction]

1) Halve Moray weapons, keep ranges the same.
2) I have no opinion on support craft, so that can stay
3) Adjust price as necessary

Here are my desires for the Morays:

1) Change Moray main guns as follows:
- 2x MW3+ TK(D3) 75cm >>>>>>>>>>> MW2+ TK(D3) 75cm
- 6x AP3+ / AT3+ >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 4x AP3+ / AT3+

2) Change 'Support Craft' to "Counts as a Skimmer that is always popped up"

3) Regulate the shield at a straight 5+ Invulnerable Save (Per TRC)

1 - Tones down the OTT firepower.
2 - Tones down the Support Craft's point-and-click gameplay style.
3 - KISS

As an aside, kill 'self planetfall'.

Wow! I almost agree 100% with E&C

Except I think an adjustment to the support craft rule affects the Dark Eldar list (why, I think, Mosc is against a change). Like Hena said, we need plenty of actual gameplay reporting on this rule before we change it.

Otherwise, I like your proposal.

As a fall back I don't mind Irondeaths either.

The Tau 'Support Craft' rule doesn't have to be the same as the Dark Eldar 'Support Craft' rule, nor do they even have to have the same name.

Well said, E&C!  We don't have to be "stuck" with that name/ability if it isn't necessary or needs to change.

Fair enough. But we still need a lot of testing of "always popped up" before it should be implemented.

And a new name. How about "High Skimmer" or "Sky Skimmer"?

And a new name. How about "High Skimmer"?

I wouldn't use a name that has a different special ability in it already... something like "high altitude" or "hover" would be more appropriate, since I think it would *also* be a "skimmer".

How about:

Notes: Skimmer (Counts as being 'popped up' at all times), Reinforced Armour, deflector shield, etc

Why the need for a full special rule?

Special Ability, not Special Rule.

Special Rules are amry specific.
Special Abilities have the potential to be used by other races army lists.
