Well this past weekend was the GW run Epic A GT that is part of call to arms.

14 epic gamers came to Warhammer world to do battle over 6 games of epic.

My list was :-

Supreme Commander with Hydra
Mech Infantry with Hydra
Leman Russ Company with Hydra
Infantry Company with Fire support
Infantry Company
Shadowsword
Shadowsword
Thunderbolt
Thunderbolt

Game One Tim Hunt - Speed Freaks

Tim's freak army has a reputation of being a tournament monster and so it proved to be for me. I never really got a handle on how to best defeat the 'uge mobs that had me penned in by turn 2. I put T'bolts on cap to protect against his landa and I think I'd have been better served using them to ground attack as much as possible as most of the army are light vehicles.

Tim took the game 3-0 and it would have been more had he made a few more activations at the end of the 3rd turn.

Game Two Chris Steel - Orcs

I've played Chris quite a few times in past tournaments and its always a fun game. Chris suffered some really bad luck in this game. His landa full of boys decided to pick on a shadowsword. Flak did manage to damage the landa but the assault stormed on. After the dust settled the bodies of a single ork stand stood near the burning ruins of the landas as the rest of the mob advanced towards the rear as fast as they could! Nothing Chris tried went to plan and my large formations managed to take the damage dished out.

I won the game 2-0 in 3 games.

Game Three Nick Rice - Marines

Nick played a really good game and I was behind the drag curve all game. After my shadowswords nuked the warhound it was downhill all the way as his reaver shreaded formations at will. I'd comment more but by this stage my brain was running on empty and I just don't remember any more!

I think Nick won 3-0 in three, but it could have been a bigger win!

Game Four Paul Sutton - Imp Guard

As one of my regular opponent Paul and I are familiar with each others play style and army choices. The game was a real slug fest with most formations below half strength and both sides tank companies broken! 2 hours of hard fighting ended in a stalemate.

Game drawn.

Game Five and Six - Mark Williams - Eldar

I'll explain. The last round at Call to Arms is straight swiss with no regard taken as to previous games, if you've played before tough.

Marks army was an all wave serpent mounted assault army built around a warlock titan. Marks luck was bad in both games. Game one the warlock lost an assault to an infantry compay, and lost to the leman russes in the second! He would have won the first game had his last activation of turn four succeeded but the dreaded one was rolled. Truth be told both sides rolled lots of ones for activations.

Both games drawn.

So over all with 1 win 3 draws and 2 losses I placed 12th out of 14.

Thanks to my 5 opponents and all the attendees for a fun weekend of gaming.

Next Epic tournament is Open War X followed by the season ending Dragon Slayer GT 29th/30th November.

Hope to see you there.

Thanks to everyone for a great weekend with every game being fun and very tough.

I usually feel very tired after tournaments but with the standard of opponents constantly rising was even more so than normal after this one and so seemed everyone else.

Hopefully with a few more entrants for Open War X we could out sell Fantasy and show Games Workshop HQ that there is life in Epic A yet.

So the top five places were held by either Marines or BL. Changes to the rules have helped these armies too much?

Which changes are you referring to??

Well terminators get to use their MW all the time now, blast markers don't count full in assault resolution.

2 of the 5 marine armies had reavers and they are much improved imho.

I'm sure Tim will give his view shortly.

First of all id like to thank all my opponants for a great weekend. I would also like to thank rug for eating all my cheese! (You know what im talking about!) I would like to thank my dice for rolling 1's all weekend and having me scream obsainities at them in the middle of warhammer world.

Ok first game was aginst Kevs beatifull black legion. i think all we did was laugh through this one. There was a strange moment where my warlock titan blew up! And i lost 2 - 0. great game though!

secound game was against pauls gaurd! Another great game. his RA saves on his russes were terrible. Oh and firing disrupt barages at broken russ companies is great! this game ended in a draw 1 - 0 to me!

Third game was against chris steel. Nothing chris did went right at all. his air assault bounced of some gaurdiens and his gargant died to fires in the third turn! at the end of the third turn there was nothing of chrisis left on the table! I won 5 - 0

game 4 on sunday morning. hoping for a game against Rugs mud marrines when they called the match up and I got dave my face droped. (I hate playing dave as I just cant beat him! even when it goes well like it did on sunday he still won 2 - 0) I was smashing his marines but he took the objectives on turn 3. lost 2 - 0.

game 4 and 5. read Mephistons post above! he even offered me a draw at the start of the 6th game! should have taken it and gone for a pint as we had a mirrored draw twice! Now if i can roll more than a 1 for activation maybee ill win a game!

came one place ahead of mephiston! great weekend though and should be at open war if there are tickets left.

My army was:

warlock titan
aspects in wave serpants
gaurdians in wave serpants
gaurdians in wave serpants
4 rangers
4 rangers
jet bikes
jet bikes
voidspinner! (im bringig 3 to the next tournament!)

I think we'll see more even more Reavers in future marine armies.
The only minus that marines got in the errata was the two phase assault sequence.

I played

Steve Gullick
Kevin Bott
Dave McElliGott
Bill Ely
Matt Arnold
Paul Sutton

Thanks to all for hugely enjoyable and friendly games and congrats to Dave, Steve, Nick and Kevin

Would the proposed cost increase for warhounds and terminators make much difference? (A characters worth!)

If the marines had a reaver they had a warhound running shotgun and the extra 25 won't change that. More expensive terminators will make including the SC harder I think as the chaplains in the assault formations will be more important.

I can't bring myself to do the Reaver/Warhound combo as no points left for thunderbolts :( Can't go anywhere without my air force! :)

First thing that I should say is that I have no problem with the presence of Reavers although the increase in turbolaser range hurts. As I faced two Reavers over my six games I was left wishing that I had brought my Guard as they love facing Reavers.

I feel that the changes that have most affected my style of play are the combination of normal and MW extra attacks and the Marine BM combat resolution change.

The MW fire fight and close combat change has been a massive boost to Marine and Black Legion armies. I am now facing small terminator formations taking on 30+ formations of orks (normal or Speed Freaks) and easily beating them. Previously it would have been close to for 4 terminators and a Chaplin to attack 30 orks (Uge Mob) but now they have 4x CC 3+ with additional 5x MW3+. Most likely resulting in 5 dead orks. If the orks are luck two of these are grots. Plus 3 so far to SM. Inspiring and a pre-engage shot from anything else will give the SM plus 6 which is then mitigated by the mob still being twice the size of the terminators to +4 to the combat resolution. Not bad for a 375pt unit. You will note that in this example I have assumed that the terminators have turned up with their armour, no BM from teleporting and that the orks were unable to get their nobs into BtB contact, ie a lot of 6’s required with a few 5+ & 4+ rolls for hits.

Whilst the problem is just as bad facing Black Legion Chosen as there can be more of them thus increasing the number of MW attacks there is also the likelihood that they will pick up blast markers. I would rather have the extra MW attacks and lose the +1 from the combat resolution.

With respect to the change to TSKNF and the halving of BM in the combat resolution. Why was this needed? Against a combat orientated army, it is hard enough to place enough BM as it is, but this makes it almost worthless I would rather in hindsight shoot at another formation instead now.

I can see that tournament armies will now graduate towards the higher Strategy Rating forces as the initial activations at the start of a turn will become more and more important.

Out of the 13 players at Call to Arms there were only 4 Guard and Ork armies (including my Speed Freaks) with 3 of them ending up in the bottom 5. I am afraid that we will lose the diversity of forces being taken to tournaments if we are not careful.
