I always felt the Manta was overgunned and should be a transport first.  It was this desire that was molded into the DE Executor, which can dump a ton of troops and vehicles on somebody's back door but has less armament than a Moray... for 750 points.

Yep and that would be a fair design for the Manta if the Tau had the assault troops the DE get. In the current design of Tau they're a forced weak assault force. Having an assault vehicle makes no sense in this instance. You force them to shoot the enemy, you get a shooting platform. Make them more assault oriented and you can make it an assault vehicle....

That 'Assault Vehicle' can planetfall for free, unload everyone, and then have them all Sustain Fire.

So it's a super-mobile, incredibly powerful gun platform* with a huge transport capacity, that can self-planetfall (Avoiding AA fire) without the need for a Spacecraft.



* I once saw a SG-rules Manta kill, stone dead, a fully-shielded Warlord Titan in a single round of shooting. I've never seen a Warlord do the same to a Manta (Either flavour).

Did it get lucky and make every single roll at maximum? and the Warlord make no saves or repairs in the end phase?

Please remember your terminology. If something is an assault carrier or assault force etc it refers to the attack, not fighting at point blank 40k style. Delivering a shed load of tanks and infantry into the fray makes you an assault carrier. Delivering them to the rear area spaceport makes you a transport. Not delivering them into a point blank firefight or close assault.

If you were playing attacker allocates then the TK could all go on the titan, the other shots go on the shields. Still, its a lot of hits and failed saves!

Any general worth his salt though would strip the shields with broadsides or piranha before firing the Manta! :) (Akin to a vulture deathstrike combo, just with a better strat rating.)

Don't get me wrong - just to be clear - I am in the "too many weapons" camp here. It's just a matter of what weapons need adjusting in my view.

despite what alot of people think the Tau do have some awesome assault troops. This is what FW's are for. Even with the current stats in the SG list they outperform Guard. FF 5+ with a 5+ save is pretty good. In the Forge World list they are even better at it with an inspiring leader. Try planetfalling a manta full of FW's its brilliant 8 FF 5+ with 8 FF 4+ in support. If you put in Stealth suits its even better with First Strike and reinforced armour in the fold as well.
