First off here is the photobucket ePilgrim was nice enough to set up.
http://s283.photobucket.com/albums/kk294/epilgrim/
Check out pictures, including Jervis (who -contrary to earlier comments on Warseer- is still with GW).  There was so much going on there, it really was a whirlwind of activity.  First off, thanks to Steve Rogers (ePilgrim) who helped me run the tourney, provided the vast majority of terrain, drove, and helped me make some excellent contacts within the GW staff.

Tourney Armies and Participants:
10 Participants were involved and army lists of all types were represented there.  Space Marines, Imperial Guard Steel Legion, Minervan Armored Legion, Daemonhunters, Chaos BL, Dark Eldar, Biel-tan, Demiurg, Orks, and Necron.  There were long time players and guys who had only played a few games of Epic.  Not one rule debate came up, not one complaint about over-powered armies, not one argument or bad attitude.  It was a real treat.  We drew randomly for who played who and right off the bat we had some great match-ups including...
Eldar vs. Dark Eldar
Space Marines vs. Chaos SM
Corey vs ePilgrim (grudge match from previous tournament)

Players came from all over and the majority of them were NOT Tactical Command posters.  Most came by word of mouth and the Games Day posting.    You folks in the UK probably see this as a small tournament but the U.S. is geographically challenged with its players spread out considerably.  Getting to the tournaments can be quite costly in time and money.  Ask a fellow countryman Lord Inquisitor.  :D

Winners:
Best Overall went to ePilgrim who took on a novice Minervan player and an experienced Necron player and pounded them both into submission.  10 objectives met in two games made him a force to be reckoned with.

1st Prize was a $200 voucher and a trophy from Games Day.  As a tournament organizer, he was gracious enough to slide the voucher to the 2nd place winner...

Lord Inquisitor with his Daemonhunters.  Feedback on his army was quite good, both how they played and how they looked.

Best Appearance went to my Dark Eldar   and I must say I was quite honored.  Once again there was a trophy and a voucher ($100).  Following ePilgrim's steps, I declined mine and slid the voucher to 2nd place who was Corey and his Necrons.  A stunning army.

Games Workshop Support
I must tell everyone that we were surprised -nay, shocked- at the extraordinarily high level of support GW provided for us.
-$300 in prizes
-Trophies
-Exclusive Handouts (multi-part SMs from Forgeworld) for the tournament participants

Dave Taylor, Alan (forgive me I don't remember his last name) and Chris 'Go-Go' were wonderful.  They came over several times before and during the tournament to make sure all was well.  Feedback from the staff throughout the day (and into the night as things travelled to the Hard Rock Cafe) was positive.  Everyone wanted the tournament to succeed and most were surprised that there was the level of participation that we had.  There were many invites to do the whole thing over again in Baltimore.  There was even a half-joking request for us to run the Epic tournament in Chicago!
Seriously, let me know if anyone is interested in running an Epic Tournament at a GW event.  I'll put you in touch with the right people and get you on your way.  I highly encourage players to do this because it is all about momentum.  Let's keep it up!

Kommando Clubs
One of the things dropped to us that I just don't know much about yet.  I'll try to get the details but support from GW may be coming to gaming clubs and that DEFINITELY includes Epic Clubs.

Jervis Johnson
While I was placing hills and sprucing trees, ePilgrim walks up and introduces me to Jervis Johnson.  Now I had never met anyone from GW, so it was a real treat to finally meet the man behind the game.  He struck me as quite personable, easy going, and very tall.  We talked for about 15 minutes or so which I understand is a pretty long time to get Jervis' ear for, so I was stoked.

Once thing he wanted everyone to know was that the Epic model ranges are NOT going away.  He did confirm what most of us already knew - there is nothing coming down the pipeline anytime soon.  Steve and I asked him various questions, most of them relating to support, model ranges, etc.  I had made the suggestion that they produce the models without making any supplements if that would be easier.  I don't know if GW will do it, but it was worth a shot.

On a personal bragging note, Jervis handled the Dark Eldar models I brought and smiled broadly.  "Utterly fantastic" was the description. What an ego stroke that was!  I know, I am shameless.

Raiders
The first copy handed out went into Jervis Johnson's hands.  He thumbed through it for about 3 minutes (that's a long time... Ask an egg!) and just kept saying how much he liked it.  I briefly explained that it was fan produced and that it was not-for-profit. He thanked me and took his copy.

This was more than just a fun thing for me though.  This is a copy of Raiders going deep into the jaws of GW so if there is a legal problem with creating the supplements I am sure I will find out about it soon enough.  Not only was it seen by lots of Epic players who were not participating (there were many, surprisingly) but a lot of GW staff came by and thumbed through it as well. A few eyebrows went up but not a negative word.  This was the litmus test for sure.

Requests
One thing that GW requested is feedback.  Go-Go and Dave both asked us that we get feedback from the Community and send it to them.

WHAT DO YOU WANT?

It is an open-ended question but by all means post here or email me.  Obvious support is production of models and rules.  But is there anything else?  What kind of club support would you like?  What can GW do for you?

To give you an example, Lance from Specialist-Games Direct Sales offered to let people who were ordering Epic models know about the Games Day tournament. The offer came a bit late but with enough advanced warning that can be a huge help.  One of my suggestions is a email gong out to former Epic customers letting them know about events.  All of this could easily be applied to other Specialist Games for sure.

Thanks for reading all of this and taking an interest.  What a wild ride.

First and foremost, it looks like the Tournament was a huge sucess, a great profile-raiser for Epic (Keep on with that enabling stuff!), and congratulations must go to ePilgrim for walking away with the title of 'Uber Epic dude'.

On a purely selfish note, were there any pictures of the Minervan army? :)

We talked for about 15 minutes or so which I understand is a pretty long time to get Jervis' ear for, so I was stoked.

At a Games Day? Yeah, that's a huge ammount of time to have with Jervis. :)

WHAT DO YOU WANT?

I think it would be a superb idea if direct sales were to obtain the old Fanatic Online mailing list, and then mailshot SG tournaments when they come available.

Adding a 'send me SG news' box to the new website would enable them to keep the list updated too.

Sounds awesome, Mosc.  That sounds a lot more like the kind of relationship I had with the local GW guys.  The more you do, they more they are willing to support you.

BTW, which one of the guys in the pics is you?  I wouldn't know you or epilgrim from Adam.

I am the smaller fella with the glasses on his shirt.  Steve is the big guy who threatened to gut-punch me if I called his army 'Squat' again.

Bill:

If it takes no more than two/three days, we could leaverage a report of your tournament into the next Firebase issue, if you fancy writing one (Mostly you could quote that page above, heh).

I'm sure it couldn't hurt Epic's profile to show the world your tourney / talk about the kind of support GW is giving.

Playing time at GW or third party stores would be nice. Leagues if there's enough turn out. And definitely more Games Days tournaments :).

It was nice to get some GW love for Epic.

I even spent time working to covert their Tournament guys. :)

We had a whole heap of interested parties wandering over with reactions ranging from "what the heck are these?" to "cool, Epic!"

It was a great time, I enjoyed the hell out of the competition. Games Day was a complete blur for me, I turned up rather late (it's a fair old way from Norfolk) and basically spent all day battling frantically on the Epic tables and running around trying to see everything else going on at Games Day! The competition ran really smoothly (even with me throwing a spanner in the works by not turning up on time), there was loads of time for games and plenty of time to run around GD.

So, from my perspective, I?ll give a quick run-down of the games played. My army:

Contained within the prescribed Inquisitorial Baking Tray transport.

My first game was against Imperial Guard. This turned out to be a complete massacre. I?d like to claim my tactical brilliance, but I rolled pretty well and my opponent had the worst luck I?ve seen in ... quite possibly ever. And I?ve been known for my bad luck! Turn one, he activates his artillery company to attack my formations, which were bunched up:

Tempting, huh? Unfortunately he failed the activation ? and failed again with the Supreme Commander re-roll. Ouch! Turn two, my Terminators teleport down and cut through them like a hot knife through butter. That pretty much summed up the game: I?m positive he failed more activations than he passed. He also only had one small formation of hydra, which I broke and destroyed early on turn 2, allowing my thunderhawk and gun-cutter free reign over the skies. His tank company really scared me:

But I was able to break it with a Grey Knight air assault supported by storm troopers and inquisitorial retinue units.

Since we started late, we called it at the end of turn two, 3-0 objectives. I had only lost a single warhound, which got jumped on by stormtroopers and his warhound (before my Grey Knight Strike Cruiser blasted the enemy warhound to atoms!).

Game two was much tougher. I was playing someone with a vanilla Marine army. He had no AA whatsoever, which immediately made me rather happy, allowing me free reign over the battlefield:

However, it seemed I had used up most of my luck on the first game, not to mention facing SR5 marines! This time I did suffer a bombardment from his whirlwinds as the opening move, targeting my bunched up troops:

Turned out to be an enormously tactical game, but I tended to find that whenever I did anything really clever, the dice gods would punish me! I managed to set up an assault against his terminators with no less than four supporting formations ? and failed to cause a single casualty in the first round... Combat for the objectives was fierce with short-ranged firefights erupting:

Ultimately, however, while I probably lost more troops than he did, he made the classic mistake of ignoring the objectives (I think he was under the impression that we?d continue for another turn), allowing me to grab 3 objectives in the last few minutes:

Note that those blasted whirlwinds persisted until the end of the game, despite my best efforts!

Both games were great fun, with fantastic opponents.

I took a few photos of my own, although only a couple as I was so manic.

Moscovian flashing his money around, obviously?

Chatting to the GW guys (sorry, I wasn?t fast enough to grab a photo of you guys getting your trophies!)

Some of the awesome stuff on display at Golden Daemon:

This kid was wearing a fantastic eldar titan suit?

All in all, probably the best Games Day I've been to (certainly the busiest!  :D ) and full kudos to you guys for organising the tournament. Not to mention declining the prizes! How much of good sportsmen can you be? Barking mad, but assuredly very much appreciated!

Great to see some support from GW. Kinda wish we got some love over here in the UK too, though with Call to Arms back on we can hope for better than previous years.

First mention of the Epic tournament by Go-Go.  I anticipate this website will also become a jump point for the Kommando Clubs as well.

It's a little discouraging that the didn't the name of the game right. Or did you actually play Epic 40k?

No, it was most certainly Epic: Armageddon.  :)  I should remind Go-Go and the rest of the staff at some point that the name has changed.
