Should Otterman buy a CNC machine?

That would be straightforward, if the models already exist in computerized format.

Most 3D printers and cutting machines seem to take STL (stereolithography) files.

Instead of buying a 3D printer, there's a lot of 3D printing service available aroud the world :) You send them your 3D file, they quote you a price and they send you a prototype (that you can recast at home).

A google search with "3D rapid prototyping service" returns a lot of hits.

I remember have read last year an article on an association in US where members payed a subscription (day, week, month, year) and had access to an amazing local with an incredible amount of tools/machines (there was a professionnal 3D printer available) for free. For the 3D printer, they just had to pay a little extra for the resin. I don't remember where it was.

Some french minis sculptors talked about some 3D prototype services in China that could even send you the rubber mold for few extra $$$.

We use a prototyping service here at work, but I got discouraged when they quoted $250 for an STL part. However, Scream is right: I should research this area a bit more.

Advantages:
No capital outlay
Professional machine operators do the dirty work
No need for maintenance, spare parts, materials, etc.

Disadvantages:
If something screws up, the money is wasted
Can't 'tinker'

I found a Canadian prototype service that quotes about 50$ for something not too big ;)

It's there:

Nope, anything with less precision than FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) is not suitable. We need SLA (Stereo Lithography Apparatus) or high precision milling. I tried using our company's machine for our stuff (e.g. Necron Pylon), and it completely sucked.

So it seems that ZCorp machines (the ones used by key3d) could do the job ;)

At least, you could use your company's machine to test your 3d file and when it's OK, transmit to 3dkey :p

I have recently started an... experiment... using a third-part SLA printing service. It's Acu-Cast, http://www.acucast.com/
