I'm beginning to sculpt a range of five super heavy tanks, both for my own use and to sell. I'm going to design them myself, and use my own names, but they will all be good proxies for Imp Guard super-heavies.

I've been working hard on improving the detail level over the tanks I've done before, and won't be casting these unless I can acheive FW level quality. So I'll need your criticism on the way!

It's early days yet, and I have a dinosaur to sculpt at the same time, but here's a very early WIP shot of the Longsword tank:

I note that the first part of the barrel is 'bulgy'; that is, it appears to have an oval cross-section Is this intentional?

I'm ambivalent about it. Part of me thinks "ew, he screwed up the cross section", and the other part of me thinks "hey, that's different, bulgy barrel"

The whole barrel is just thrown together at the moment - it needs sanding, cleaning up etc. That first bit is to be replaced with shockers and a gun mount.

Looks good so far :)

However if you want me to turn up the criticism knob I think the following areas need to be looked into:

Overall design:

Gun looks very heavy compared to the fairly small turret. Combined with the turet being placed so high on the tank it looks a bit unbalanced. Obviously this may change when more detail is added to the turret: Furthermore the balance of the tank would also be dependant on how wide it is, which is impossible to judge from the pic. I definitely think the turret needs some kind of counterweight at the back to balance out the barrel.

Tracks: Looks solid and symmetrical. However personally I think different sloping angles for the front and back end may looks more interesting

Details: The bulging barrel is a non issue if the turret also has some detail added. Main thing is just that the barrels thinkness shouldnt make tha tallest part of the tank body (if that makes sense). barrel detail on the middle "bands" looks slightly "soft."


That's about all I can think off. Cant wait to see this progress :)

Hey reaver, I really like the concept.  The tracks reminds me of the swedish S-tank tank destroyer:

edit- the tracks are slack in those photos, you get a better idea here

Whick makes me wonder- what about doing away with the "turret"- instead have the barrel coming out of the "lip" below it- im assuming this is a SH tank destroyer style of thing, in which case a really low profile would make sense.

The gun barrel seems to close to the top of the turret.

Looking good, solid start to a tank design.
I like that you're trying to make more superheavies, there should be thousands of variants of everything in the 40k 'verse (too much firefly) and super heavies are lax at five.
Don't like the stuck up turret thing, low profile tanks are the way forwards.
Nice gun, I know how difficult it is to make these and your's is good, I actually like the abnormal shape at the rear of the barrel. Needs work to make it look intentional but I think a different shape would be cool.
Have you thought about playing with rarer weaponry? The big gun has lots of variants, but there is only the Stormblade that wanders from that architype (barring the ever-present shadowsword, but hardly a rare weapon and gone beyond interesting now)

What material is the black stuff, and what size is this, there's no scale representation...?
How big are your track discs and what method of construction did you use?

All in all, nice beginning and interesting idea. Keep it coming.

If this is epic scale, the bolter is very good, I'm impressed.

Not much to show today, I'm afraid - I've been busy with other jobs. Just a bit more work on a sponson and a secondary turret.
Jonluke, the black stuff is Sculpey, baked then sanded into shape.

Hopefully I'll get a bit further tomorrow!
