I'm in favour of keeping the names as they are and spending more time playing the game (and discussing the list contents rather than the title).

Ditto, Legio gryphonnicus is fine by me.  Its been around for long enough and sounds good.  In fact I like the fact that it is pidgin greek/latin.

Mixed heritage words are not that unusual, even in modern day english.

Television ? from the Greek "tele" meaning "far" and the Latin "videre" meaning "to see"

In the face of the multitudinous butchering of all manner of historical and literary references committed by GW, is a mix of latin-greek-germanic actually a big deal?

Obviously you didn't minor in Linguistics :-)

I'm not focusing on it, but I've taken graduate coursework on it as part of my MA program (within the last year, even), so if you want to get all linguistically technical...

Legion has linguistic roots going all the way back to PIE with cognates in Germanic, Slavic, Hellenic, and others.

A couple minutes on Google Scholar show Griffon's origins are highly speculative, but its presence in Hellenic could be a borrowing from the Semitic family or from the Satem branch of IE (which might imply a deeper IE root).  Etymological sources list its presence in English as OF, Latin, and Greek, in that order, indicating a latinate source as more likely.

Both terms appear the written language ca late 13th/early 14th century when, as you know, virtually all newly borrowed vocabulary was French or Latin.  Direct borrowing from Greek is possible but unlikely based on time period and early sources.

I think the funniest GW naming tidbit is Corax, the Primarch of the Raven Guard. Corax literally meaning 'raven' in Latin.

Don't forget the primarch of the Iron Hands, who I believe is Ferrus Manus.

Let's face it, when they were writing the background for all these guys, they probably didn't realize how popular the game would become. If they had, they might have spent more time on it.

GW borrows alot from history. Look at Kar-Duniash. The Segmentum HQ of the Ultima Segmentum. It's another term for Babylonia meaning Harbour of Duniash.
