semajnollissor - What kind of CAD models do you have?
Well, what kind do I need to have?
Once you figure out what software you'll be using, let everyone know. I have access to a weird variety of 3D CAD programs - AutoCad, IDeas, ProE. I'm not proficient in all of them, but they all have different export options, so I'm pretty sure I can get you the type of file that you'd require. That is if they export functions don't screw something up, which is pretty common.
To take advantage of rapid prototyping equipment, such as 3D printers or this device, the file types have to be STL.
Several 3D programs support this format, but in varying degrees of suitability. Rhino (http://www.rhino3d.com/) brags that they're the best, but the $1000 price tag is concerning. A new offshoot, MoI (http://moi3d.com/) is only $200 and is descended from Rhino, but seems to want a tablet input device.
I have also dreamed about getting a tablet.
So, my plan is:
Acquire a 3D program and start designing,
or,
suck it up, become a man, and learn to sculpt and scratchbuild.
