Aha! Not quite what I had in mind.....
Too subtle for an isolated islander like me, I'm afraid!  :p

Hey dude, mixing a vacuum cleaner reference with the holiness of celestial engineering would cause an ordinary person's nerd card revocation.

But since you maintain a forum and an SF miniature line, you probably have nothing to worry about.

L-4, you ever met any tankers? That is, tank crew?

With our hypothetical unpressurized tank but suited crewmembers, would they need a lot more crewspace to do their suited duties?

(Edited to apologize to the rest of the board for assuming that only L-4 has had military service. The question is, of course, open to anyone with relevant experience.)

While I'm Navy, not army, I'd assume that any tank operating in a vacuum would be both airtight and the crew would be suited, leading to MUCH larger tanks (or very heavily automated, most likely both).

for a really good discussion about this (from an RP perspective), take a look at the Jovian Chronicles stuff from DP9.

The Space Marines are supremely capable of fighting in vacuum. In fact, it's one of their major uses. Marines really don't fight planetside meatgrinders as much as you'd think from 40K. One would assume that both their vehicles and certainly their armour are pressurised (drop pods and land raiders are, at least).

Sadly rather underrepresented in the background. There are a lot of examples of boarding actions by Space Marines in vacuum. The only actual space battle I can think of was in a novel where the Dark Angels were in combat with Chaos Marines (World Eaters I think). Heh - I remember that in that novel the Chaos Champion went into battle in vacuum without a helmet (just to annoy Heresiarch). Some kind of forcefield, presumably. Actually, come to think of it, Space Marine Terminator Captains used to have forcefields around their head so they could look cool without a helmet in a vacuum...

Other Imperials - there are quite a lot of examples of things like Adeptus Mechanicus Explorators in space suits. Imperial Navy craft such as marauders are space-capable. As far as guard - I would expect that there are regiments like the Elysians that are equipped for vacuum-combat. One example - I don't know how reliable you want to take this source - in the game Fire Warrior you had to fight against Storm Troopers in vacuum. Seems reasonable that elite units like these would be able to fight in vacuum. Oh, and sisters too.

As for aliens it varies. Tau seem to be fully enclosed, as do eldar. Tyranids can survive vacuum to a varying degree (as an example, purestrain 'stealers can survive full vacuum for a limited time, while obviously their ship-organisms are perfectly happy in a vacuum!). Orks seem to make extensive use of forcefields to insulate their vehicles - they certainly have space-capable landers and fighter-craft.

In Warrior Brood Space Marines go out on the outside of their ship to remove Tyranid 'stuff' from the hull.  Not much of a battle description - more like weeding in space.

hey otter just my two cents, the crew would probbably be suited, but if the army in question didnt want to redesign the whole tank it would probably easier to seal it than to make the inside vacume proof. all those controlls and gauges and wiring.(vacuum is horrible stuff, ruins anything not design for it, makes rubber brittle as glass for example)
i'de say the best way to represent your vacum sealed tanks would be just to add extra air tanks, and maybe a wierd radiator thing like you see sticking off of space craft, gotta get rid of the engine heat in that vacuum.

Thanks, guys. I hadn't thought of the sisters.

Overpressure would probably be desirable to keep out regolith (lunar dust) or other weird gasses in trace atmospheres.

I would if I should develop some vacuum rules for Epic? Perhaps against certain races the 'to hit' values would get better. Like against Elysian or Orks, their AP and AT penalty would be 2, so that a heavy bolter would become AP3+ (instead of the normal AP5+). This would represent the unforgiving nature of the environment. Against SM and Tyranids,  the penalty would only be 1 to represent their robustness.
