Battles in vacuum

I've read somewhere that Space Marine vehicles are vacuum-enabled, but what about Imperial Guard? Any examples of them fighting in vacuum?

Tyranids can obviously survive in vacuum, as can Necron, Eldar (all flavors except Exodites), some Tau, and naughty Space Marines.

What about Orks? They're probably not interested in doing anything in vacuum.

The Chimera is amphibious I believe,  but not NBR/vacuum ready.

As to the Orks, you're probably right.

After all... in space, no one can hear you Waaagh!

I think that even if the Marine vehicles are not 'vacuum packed', the Marines power armour is (which leads me to think that it is a waste of time making a Rhino airtight anyway).

The Chimera is amphibious, but I dont think that other IG vehicles are.

Even if the Orks were interested in making their vehicles airtight, I am not sure that I would trust it. Eldar are. There are stories of Falcons descending out of clouds.

The minority of Tau are, mostly limited to aircraft.

Hang on, the Orks use force fields provided by the Mekboyz. These are also used around Hulks, I believe.

I would expect Ork spacecraft to be airtight, as well as things like Landas and Drop Rokks, but I'm not sure Fighta-bommas are pressurized. I'd be surprised if their vehicles are airtight.

I seem to remember some emperors children marines (and some death guard) assaulting one of the rebel strongholds on a moon of istvaan in the second HH books: the moon was descibed with no atmosphere I think. Marines appear to be able to operate well enough in such environments, admittedly this would be from 30k, not 40k :)

Space Marine Vehicles have to be airtight. They are transported by Landing craft and THT to surface and the crew is within the vehicles. Also the electronics and engine will not be glad about temperatures about 2-10 ?K

As long as someone remembers to put their helmet on before they go out for a walk in vacuum anyways.

The no helmet thing has always been a pet peeve for me... impregnable armour + no helmet = pointless.

According the some versions of the fluff I believe that both Valkyries and Vultures are interface vehicles along with Marauders, Thunderbolts and Lightnings. I also seem to recall from a couple of editions ago that the Imperial Navy maintained their own corps of Stormtroopers for use a marines in boarding actions.

Again though that might have been second edition IIRC and the fluff has definitely mutated since then.

Orks Landa should be airtight or the planetfalling ability is very odd in it :D. Hulks are most likely protected by powerfields as vanvlak suggests.

Does it count if my Orks battle in a... DYSON Sphere.

Ahhhh, geek humour. There is nothing like it!

Umm CS,  a Dyson sphere would contain:
1 star
x planets (x = 0-4 probably)
y moons (y = 0 to 2x I'd guess)
1 vacuum

So they'd still have difficulties... ;)

The reason I was asking tied into my recent Military Madness postings, featuring Tanks! On! The! Moon! That started me reflecting on what a tracked vacuum enabled vehicle would look like, and that in turn led to the WH40K space battle question.

I'm not a fluff-master, but it seems like most action takes place in atmospheric environments, with Space Hulk being the most significant exception.

So, what would a vacuum enabled tank look like? No need for an exhaust system. Human technology would probably utilize fuel cells, high density batteries, super-compact nukes, or un-obtanium reactors. No traditional stowage in terms of personal effects, but camoflauge tarps would still be useful, as would spare parts, like track pieces.

The question also leads to "Should the vehicles be pressurized, or would the crew be suited? Or both?" If the vehicle is pressurized, hatches won't be as prominent, and more periscopes would be useful. If unpressurized, we could still have dudes popping out of the turret.

Either I am being too subtle... Or my sense of humour is way off...

Tough crowd!
