Imperator!

I don't think an Imperator is going to be that much more vulnerable in a 5000pts+ game than a tournament game. It needs to be balanced for around 2000pts to 5000pts because that is what all its opposition is balanced to surely?


In larger games it will be more susceptible to blast markers as there are more shots being fired.  In addition it allows you to stick with a 1/3 allotment if you would like.  Besides, you don't bring an Imperator titan to just any old squabble.  

FYI I put together some stats for a larger Eldar titan in the Lugganath list - completely untested it still represents a direction people may want to go in the future.

THanks Rug and Rag !  Yes, the L4 version of the I-Titan has a MOAG (Mother Of All Guns) !  Which I used to replace the standard Carapace. And I prefer to call the "groin gun" - a waist weapon. Since this Forum is rated "G" ! :laugh:

For the record Im quite happy with the direction E&C is taking it as part of the AMTL list, just think it needs something a little extra (a special rule or something) so I will say "Yes, I have the points and it adds something Warlords can't"

-1 on enemy Spacecraft ops, an additional SC re-roll, it counts as AMTL Blitz (as it is a mobile HQ), +1 on strat roll ..... anything that sets it apart and makes 1250pts really worth it.

All very interesting ideas!

I like the idea of a +1 to the strategy rating of the army (Only the very greatest of skilled princepsii would take to battle with an Emperor class Titan?).

Ahemmm... Well after going back and reading this thread again because I was looking over the emperor titan stats an idea came to mind. I remember multiple activations and splitting weapons was mentioned and the cons of being able to do this was a bunch of really complicated rules and too many blast markers being laid down eventually killed the idea.

Thinking over it again, The titan already has tertiary armament but the remaining weapons are not labeled as primary or secondary and I think they should be for what I'm proposing. Since tertiary only come into play in FF, I'm going to ignore that for the time being. The leg bastions are for transport and also won't factor into this. That leaves the rest of the weapons systems to divvy up. So, the imperator, for example, still has

Plasma Annihilator 90cm
Hellstorm Cannon 60cm
Defence Laser 90cm
4x Battle Cannon 75cm
Quake Cannon 90cm

Now there are several methods this could be broken up, but I think that the special weapons should be grouped as the primary armament because they are unique to the emperor titans. That means that Imperator would look something like this:

Primary Weapons Systems:
Plasma Annihilator 90cm
Hellstorm Cannon 60cm
Defence Laser 90cm

Secondary Weapons Systems:
4x Battle Cannon 75cm
Quake Cannon 90cm

Teritiary Weapons Systems:
Tertiary armament (15cm)

Transport Capability:
Leg Bastions

Ok, other than add a few spaces on the army list, this does have a point. Since every weapon being capable of targeting a separate formation is time consuming and lays too many blast markers and multiple activations would be a mess for deciding what can be done on each activation, instead let the titan fire at separate formations with each weapons group. This means that the Imperator would be capable of firing on a maximum of two enemy formations a turn.

Now since this might still be too powerful, the titan can only do this when on overwatch or advance actions. This is to portray that on all other actions the titan crew are more focused on movement or concentrated firepower in the case of the sustained fire action, to prosecute multiple targets. Overwatch may be tricky but it simply means that you can activate the overwatch once with each weapons group.

All this means that the imerators stats would look something like this:

Primary Weapons:
Plasma Annihilator 90cm 4x MW2+ Titan-Killer (D3), Forward Arc, Slow Firing
Hellstorm Cannon 60cm 10BP Forward Arc
Defence Laser 90cm MW2+ / AA4+ Titan-Killer (D3)

Secondary Weapons:
4x Battle Cannon 75cm AP4+ / AT4+ â€â€

A thought on the Hellstorm Cannon:

Range: 120cm 6x2/3bp, slow firing. (MW?)

That way it would allow players to go hell for leather with 12/18bp or to split things out a bit more; i reckon multiple bombard shells can't be loaded THAT quickly even on something like an Emperor.

I would also try to avoid as many special rules as possible; though i do agree on the BTS goal idea.

If the splitting of fire is gone for I like limiting it to two formatons but I would rather give all the weapons very specific arcs to limit how it is used than the very arbitary grouping weapons, this would lead to more tactical thinking about facings and the disrobution of firepower.

I don't like enforcing limits by weapon arc. I think it sets a bad precedent to balance a unit by limiting the direction it can fire as opposed to balancing in a way that allows the player freedom to choose how to employ the unit. I don't believe that forced limitations equals more tactical thinking, just more frustration. While I do concede that the grouping I've proposed is somewhat arbitrary it does greatly simplify the whole process since you only need to track which group fired opposed to which weapon has fired. It is also not entirely arbitrary in that the primary weapons are unique to the titan while secondary weapons are not. Weapons groups also makes it crystal clear as to how many formations could be targeted since each group can still only fire once and it requires no additional rules to dictate the unit can only target two formations.

I would also limit the power of this ability by saying it can only be used by retaining after the titan has taken its action.
This goes back to the whole multiple activations for the same unit that I think should be avoided since it opens a nasty can of worms. There is no need to complicate the activations when limiting the capability can more simply be done by only allowing it under particular actions.
