Regarding the cheeseburger, I fail to see what the fuss is about - it looks delicious!

I'd have to think hard between one of those, spam, or a fray bentos pie

The new MREs are "suppossed" to be better then the originals that we got issued in '84-'85, in the ROK ... they still had not "prefected" them !   The LRRP Rats were best, but had to be re-hydrated.  I think they just had one of those companies that produce food for camping, put'm in OD plastic bags !   They must have had beacoup left over from Vietnam.  But I never will know where they got the idea to include and "cornflake bar" in the pack !   Mmmm ... I'm getting "hungery" !  :D

T-rats were the best, but you had either be hungry or have friends!

I think I still have a chocolate chip cake from an 80's era MRE...  :p

Cheeseburger in a can - a step down from the pizza in a cup for sure.

The MREs look good.

We didn't get them issued either, we always seem to acquire them while reconnoitering enemy supply routes while on OPFOR.  That makes them taste even better!  :p

Hey Legion 4,

Since you were in the ROK then I know you will remember kimchei (think thats how its spelled) one wiff of that makes anything look more appetizing!

True but Obscure Factoid:

There are currently 37 different words that describe the color green in the Englush Language....7 of which were invented and copywrited by Legion 4 and refer to subtle shades of camo!

Ah yes, I had back to back tours (Jan'84-Nov'85) with a Mech BN, in the Western Corridor and the DMZ. The smell of Kimchi in summer time could knock a buzzard off a s*h*i*t wagon ! :O Never really aquired a taste for it ... thank God !! Being the only "round-eye" on a packed bus on a pass to Seoul, in August could have been a form of torture !   Of course, Asians told me, us round eyes smell like greasy meat !?   After a week or so in the bush, summer or winter, we all smelled like #??&/* !!!   And you are correct Wombat, I'm now working on the color(s) of Tan !

The main thing that I remember about Korea was it was too damn hot in the summer and too damn cold in the winter....and come to think of it..that sort of sums up every place I found myself during my career as an officer and gentleman (by act of congress... not birth) in the USAF.

First Texas for flight training...then Korea..then Germany...then Saudi Arabia/Iraq and then back to Korea....after flight training was home about three weeks out of six years!

Obscure Factoid:

In the orignal draft of Hammer's Slammers...the Slammers were originally refered to as Legion 4's Lounge Lizards

You got that right ! As an Grunt Officer (my TAC OIC at Benning said, he could make me an officer but never make me a Gentleman ! ) it seems we were always too hot, too cold, wet, tried, dirty and since I was in before GPS, on ocassions - lost ! :D           And you are correct, DRAKE wanted that title but I didn't want to be portrayed as a Vegas Lounge Singer in the 25th-26th Century and Mercenary Commander ! :D

The KimChi made on camp by the locals was good, I couldn't stomach the real local stuff though outside the wire.  One of our guys liked the stuff, unfortunately he broke a jar of it inside the Humvee!  It wreaked for weeks!!!

Kimchi definitely gets my vote as a Weapon of Mass Destruction! :p

Any plan that survives first contact with the enemy... is by nature... fundamentally flawed!

Having suffered through several different renditions of rations (everything from backpacker freeze-dried to both '80s and modern "Meals Rejected by Ethiopians"), I think my preferred "deployed food" was the sliders served every saturday lunch after field day.  Ah, the joys of naval service... (although pizza for Saturday midrats was usually a good reason to stay awake until mids).

but that burger-in-a-can actually *looked* pretty decent.  Too bad it seems they missed the all-important texture.
