On the surface it sounds like an accounting nightmare, but I can see how it would have some advantages over the current individually priced tanks. This way you could price the Tank Platoons higher (which they probably should be) for the base formation and still allow for flexibility of composition.
Interesting - looking forward to seeing it.

I know, I'm hesitating because it breaks a normal rule on army list building (All units normally cost positive points, not negative)... on the other hand I think it would provide superior balance.

Try it out on epaper and then send it to a couple of people via email. Get feedback on how it worked for ease of building a list. If it is positively received post it in the forum.
I think people would rather a well balanced list over a standard-looking unbalanced list.

To be honest I would keep the system you use now. It?s straightforward and the list do not need change only to get a change. Else it is already tested and it works well.

Soren, I don't think E&C is suggesting the change just for fun. There are some balance concerns about the tanks. I can tell you after being on the receiving end of the tank platoons they seem underpriced (even the Minervan player ePilgrim thought as much). The problem is you can't adjust the platoon price easily since everything is based on a single value, so by changing the platoon you change the company.
The only alternative I'd see is to price the standard Leman Russ at 65 points and adjust everything around that. Keep in mind I'm not saying it must be done. I am just putting it out there that I believe these formations are overpowered because of their pricing discount.

?s I know 6 LR in the LatD list cost also 400, Minervans are 390. Nobody complained about them there.

One thing to bear in mind is that most of the battlereports we've seen for the Minervans so far have been versus armies that are also experimental.

Mine are only from validated lists. Experimental vs. experimental does add very few to balancing, as you tweak on 2 lists instead of 1.

Yeah, but when the Necrons LOSE against an army I tend to raise my eyebrows a bit.
Keep the pricing if you think its right - when I made my comments I wasn't expecting any immediate change, only that that we should be sensitive to the pricing on the tanks when we're playtesting. Soren, if you have a chance try breaking the tank platoons. Field as many as you can and see how they affect your game. My new opponent studderingdave will be playing the Minervans in about 2 weeks and I'll be sure to field a regular list against them.

Mosc: They are 400 pts if you take russes. You cannot really take muck of them.
Maxing them would be 2 LR Companies and 4 LR Platoons with 200 left. 6 Activations without real upgrades. But that?s the problem with every min-maxing, you get weird results. Same with LatD with minimum equipped Coven and Tank platoons.

I think something E&C should consider is raising the price of Thunderers from 40 to 50 pts. They are really too cheap. Even for 300 you get 6 4+RA 30 ignore cover, uncrossfirerable demolisher-clones and it?s worth.
I have checked the latest Minervan list used here and all use Thunderers to add cheap RA units. This is not the way they should appear in the list.

Agreed, regardless of the main gun Thunderers are a little too cheap.

When can we count on a corrected list? ^^
