Know your limit.  I have enough cruisers of each type (chaos) to make just about any force for any reason, even demonships.  If you want to go on the cheap, pick a style you like and go with it, lances, weapons batteries, or fighters,  or a combination of those.  If you're willing to sink considerably more cash, add demonships to spice things up, make a few customs, get some grand crusiers.  the most important thing is that you like your force, how it looks, how it plays, and it doesn't strain your wallet too much!

For the IN the following ships are considered good or useful:

Emperor class battleship (never go wrong with this one)
Mars class battlecruiser
Excorcist class grand cruiser
Dominator class cruiser (very good)
Gothic class cruiser (very good)
Sword class escort
Cobra class escort

Above are vessels which will never go wrong, dice luck aside of course.

I advice you to check out the following sites & forums as well:

www.portmaw.com

Welcome to the Game!

Meh, you may design your fleets to be effective, I design mine for style.  Form over function evryday!

Hey,

my fleets are stylish & fluffy as well but when someone asks what good ships are I'm telling him what I think is good.

Out of curiosity, has anyone magnetized the various bitz to allow customization of the plastic cruisers?

I havent personally, but I hear of many who have - seems like a good idea to save cash.
All good advice given above with regards to ships, although I also like Firestorm class frigates, which can be pretty useful against certain opponents.
Lunars are also good all-rounders, especially if squadroned.
Personally I also think the Apocalypse BB is a good bet too, although the lock on thing is a pain. Really cool model though.

Personally I wouldn't bother with magnets. It is a ot of work and Blue tac will do just as well in most situation. Cheaper and much easer IMO. But a matter of taste of course :;):

I've started doing the magnetic tape treatment for my latest hulls that I have gotten.

I managed to find at a Hobby Lobby for 6 bucks a roll of magnetic tape which will last me quite a while

So far I've done 4 plastic cruiser hulls (including the dorsal mounts in case I want to use them as Ad Mech ships,) 1 former Apocalypse battleship (snipped off the nova cannon),  1 Ad Mech battleship and one Vengeance hull (with the bottom weapon batteries fixed as I don't use the exorcist) with me about to do a second Vengeance hull that I just got yesterday.

Quite honestly, ANY IN ship can end up being useful,  even the lowly Lunar.
