Armageddon.
The rules have been streamlined and make for a more interesting and realistic game.
Having played all but Adeptus I can give E:A a hearty 2 thumbs up!

I have to agree that EA is my favourite version (so far!). It hits the right balance between detail and fast play, and throws in some very nice tactical elements.

Second favourite would be first edition, because although the order system slowed the game down, it did simulate battlefield effects well.

Third would be Epic40K, as I really like the streamlined approach of the game, and the way that initiate changes in the game rapidly.

It rather depends on what you mean by 'favourite' doesn't it?

As far as rules go I like EA best and have voted for that (though Epic 40k wasn't bad)

For minitatues e40k had the best range - though the current range has many excellent ones and some good improvements over prior incarnations. 2nd ed was good for orks but some really duff models for other imperials.

As for the overall experience - well the excitement of Space Marine and Adpetus Titanicus followed by SM2 and Titan Legions was pretty intense. But I was a lot younger in those days.

It's funny but I can clearly recall obsessing about epic since a mate of mine showed me Space Marine - I don't think I've ever stopped since. Still! there are worse drugs to get hooked on I suppose!

Rules wise I'm with EA too though I've a soft spot for SM and SM2 seeing as that was where I started. By the time E40k came out I was scundered with constant changes and boxed everything in the attic (I was also getting married, raising children etc) When EA came out I jumped at the chance to dust the stuff down, now all I have to do is find a couple of gaming partners (in hand, yipee)

I guess I would have to say that SM2/TL is my favorite, because I've played it far and away more than all the other versions combined. That doesn't mean that I think it has the best rules. AT/SM1 is probably a better set of rules, but I didn't play it that much. I like the extra details it has that SM2/TL doesn't. NetEpic is clearly superior to SM2/TL, but I couldn't vote for it. Overall E:A might be the best set of rules, but I can't say that it's my favorite.

I'm quite surprised with the heavy bias in this poll - which, incidentally, would have been very slightly less had I not selected the wrong edition when voting  :p

Not really that surprising.  You'd expect most people here to be players using the current ruleset.  Bias seems natural.

Dunno, expected more of the older set to prefer the older editions.

Hi!

If you haven't noticed, as time goes by, there are less and less people who were around in epic's golden age.

If people have heard of epic at all the probability that they play the most recent version is high. I would say the bias is normal and natural.

Don't forget some of those versions are over a decade old and their exposure is reduced to a reduced group of "fans".

You'd get the same response in any poll were you listed version preferences. The most recent version will get more votes by default by virtue of its exposure.

Then again, if your an epic fan, regardless of version your a vanishingly small minority in the world or wargames.

Enjoy epic, whatever the form.  :D

I don't know, a similar poll put up during 3rd edition (E:40k) would have produced a substantially different result, no?

Hi!

Not really. It would heavily depend WHERE the poll was made. If it was on the old majordomo list Epic 40k would have easily come out on top, since most of us that didn't like it had left.

If you run this same poll on the netepic list now you get a different result.

But overall, back then they did run some polls (mostly usenet for what that was worth) and it looked like epic 40k was favored ( I remember a distinct one that erupted in a fun flame war.... ;) ).

Of course that doesn't represent what happened in the marketplace, but then again thats the same situation now. Goes to show that "positive perception" of rules and sales are not always similar.

Then again I'd rather have the sales the SM2/TL had rather than the positive perception the more recent rules have had, but no market presence.

No sales or market presence means no continued support.

SM2/TL ran for 5 years of support never equaled since.

Those rules through netepic are still with us 11 years after the GW "dumped it".

Will any other version be supported like this by its fans ten years from now?

Time will tell.

Hi Guys,

I have to say that the two Epic versions I've enjoyed the most and played the most have been:

Net-Epic
2nd Ed. Space Marine + Titans Legions

I also like E-A, but it doesn't seem to have the same wacky, zany results that those earlier editions had.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Don't worry, Van. You're hardly alone in the "older crock" category.  :D
