Well, I got in an unexpected third game with the Necrons this weekend, so I put together a slight variant on Neal's "popcorn" list.  My opponent picked an Ork army from my copious number of lists.  *laugh*

I'll get the armies up now, and try to get the batrep up later today.

NECRONS chose edge deployment.

Deployment:

Necron kept all formations in reserve.

Orks had no reserves.

Orks garrison the Stormboyz and Gunzmob off the Ork Blitz on overwatch.

Turn 1

Whole lotta teleporting going on!

The Pylons arrive in an over looking position, with Pylon 1 receiving 1 Blast marker.

The Venetors arrive to harass several Ork formations, but wind up getting 2 Blast markers on arrival in the woods.

No Monolith formations break this time in (WOOHOO!), but Monolith 4 does pick up a Blast marker?

Turn 1 - continued

Strategy roll: Orks ?*DANGIT!*

The Kult of Speed revs up and engages the Venetors, some of the crazed Ork bikers even braving the woods to come to grips with the enemy.

The Orks lose 2 Warbikes and a Buggy, while the Venetors, with heaps of Ork support fire pouring down on them, are wiped out.

The Stompamob *advances* (Dang inexperienced Ork players? that's not how it's done!), blasting into Monolith 2, which is completely destroyed, and Monolith 4, which breaks.

Phalanx 2 emerges from broken Monolith 4 to engage the Kult of Speed? they lose a single Necron Warrior and trash 3 Bikes and 1 Warbuggy. ?Support fire and resolution destroys the 2 Skorchas, 1 Buggy, and 2 Bikes. ?(While reviewing the notes and pictures to do the batrep, I just realized my opponent was actually using a "Big" Kult of Speed, not a "Normal" one? HMMMM!) The victorious Necrons vanish using Monolith 6's Portal to arrive at the Tomb Complex.


The Warbarque ponderously advances and pops up to fire on Blitz Brigade 2, taking out 1 Flakwagon and 1 Gunwagon.

Blitz Brigade 1 *advances* and fires on Monolith 1 with all its might and catching the Warbarque as well! ?The Monolith formation withers away under the massed fire (Man, that painted Monolith 1 is unlucky!) and the Warbarque suffers 1DC damage? and has its Portal shut down!

Blitz Brgade 1 *advances* and fires on the Warbarque, doing another 1DC damage.

Phalanx 1 steps from the Portal in Monolith 2 and engages the intermingled Blitz Brigade 2 and the Stompamob.

The Necron suffer the loss of 1 Immortal (Yeah right!), 1 Warrior, and 1 Pariah (Man those guys are unlucky), but they wipe out the Blitz Brigade and 4 Stompas with a little help from their friends?

"I kan take it!" shouts one of the Stormboyz. (My opponent was momentarily unsure what to do, got out the 30cm ruler, check something, and laughed.) ?The Stormboyz enegage Pylon 2, with a single Stormboy narrowly reaching base contact? and the rest of his mates staying 15.1cm back! ?

All the whacking and banging doesn't produce any obvious results, but the Pylon is shut down via combat resolution? and quiet sobbing can be heard emanating from within?

The Gunzmob drops overwatch and doubles to fire on Pylon 1, doing 1DC as well as breaking the Necron monstrosity.

Monolith 6 doubles after the damaged Stompamob and drops another Stompa.

Phalanx 3 then engages out of Monolith 6 and hits the Stompas hard! ?They lose 2 Warriors, but with the help of *eight* support hits, only the Supa-Stompa, with 2DC left remains for the Orks.

Ready to be obliterated, the Fighta-bommerz dive in? and aren't fired on! ?They bank around to hit the Warbarque? and it crash to the ground, crackling with green lighting which quickly fades to black? (So much for my Strategy Rating 3!)


Monolith 7 doubles towards Blitz Brigade 1 and takes out a Flakwagon.

Phalanx 4 then engages Blitz Brigade 1 and wipes it out without suffering a scratch!


The Warboss yells, "YES, I TOLD YA TA *ADVANCE*", so the Warband does, hammering Phalanx 4 and dropping 3 Warriors, plus the Necron Lord's unit, breaking them!


Monolith 3 advances on the Supa-Stompa and does another 1DC damage?

End of Turn:

The Kult of Speed fails to rally, as does Pylon 1 and Monolith 4 in reserves.

Turn 2

Unusual? no teleports!

Strategy roll: Orks

"SUSTAIN, DAMN YOU, SUSTAIN!" shouts the Warboss? and the Supa-Stompa does so, catching Phalanx 1 in the blast? and the edge of Monolith 3?

when the smoke clears, the Phalanx is *GONE*? as is the Monolith! ?A great cheer goes up from the Orks! ?(Sustaining and advancing and shooting effectively? damn Bad Moons!)

The Stormboyz continue their tricks, getting 4 ladz up against Pylon 2 and the rest out of support range. ?They do 1DC damage to the Necron device and easily win? but it's still not been destroyed.


Monolith 7 advances on the Warband, getting nice and close and flattens a Grot.

Phalanx 2 then jumps from the Tomb Complex, through Monolith 7 to engage the Warband, despite the support of the Supa-Stompa?

It is a bloodbath. ?In round 1, the Necrons lose 3 Warriors, but terminate 5 Grots, 2 Boyz, and 1 Nob with the full support of Monolith 7

In the next round the Necrons lose 2 more Warriors and the Pariah, but take out 6 Boyz and another Nob, with support? and then the rest of the Orks just panic and flee for the hills, not a single one left to threaten the Tomb World? (WOW! ?Now *that* was a Gauss Flux Arc!)

The Gunzmob doubles and fires on Phalanx 3 and Monolith 6, trashing 1 Necron Warrior and spreading Blast markers.

Monolith 6 advances on the burning Supa-Stompa? and pitches it over, destroyed!

Monoloth 5 doubles on the Stormboyz and puts a Blast marker on them.

The Fighta-Bommerz leisure buzz down and ground attack Phalanx 2, eliminating it.

Phalanx 3 then pours out of Monolith 5 to engage the Stormboyz, who keep whacking on Pylon 2. ?They bring down the Pylon, but lose 4 Stormboyz? and then a Deth Kopta as then flee the wave of Necrons?


End of Turn:

All Ork formations rally.

All onboard Necrons rally, Phalanx 4 and the Obelisk of Monolith 3 rally in reserve.

Turn 3

A single teleport, the Obelisk of Monolith 3 arrives safely at the Ork Bltiz.


Strategy roll: NECRONS!  FINALLY!

Pylon 1 sustains fire on the Stormboyz, vapourizing 1 Deth Kopta and breaking the formation.

Monolith 4 doubles after the Kult of Speed and puts a Blast marker on them.

The Big Guns *advance* on Phalanx 3? and only the Pariah is left when the smoke clears!

Monolith 7 doubles on the Big Gunz and puts a Blast marker on them.

Expecting another easy ride, the Fighta-bommerz show up to ground attack the Obelisk of Monolith 3? one of them doesn't make it to the target zone? but the remaining Flyboyz take out the Obelisk.  (Wow, first AA shot in all my games, at least I hit!)

Monolith 5 doubles towards Ork Objective 1.

The Kult of Speed doubles to the Tomb Complex?

?and the very small Phalanx 4 engages them!  They each lose a member? but the Necrons win by "1", trashing a Buggy, but both sides are broken?


End of Turn:

All onboard formations rally.

The lone Pariah of Phalanx 3 rallies?

Orks 1 (BTS) vs Necrons 1 (BTS)

Turn 4

No teleports.

Strategy roll: Orks.

The Gunzmob doubles to fire on Monolith 6, taking out the Obelisk and breaking the Necrons.

Monolith 5 doubles after the Kult of Speed and takes out a Buggy, breaking them as well.

The Stormboyz double onto the Necron Blitz, snickering as they finger their Choppas expectantly?

Monolith 7 advances to the Ork Blitz and fires on the Gunzmob, placing a single Blast marker.
Slightly more cautious, the Fighta-bommerz almost don't come in? but do, losing another wing-ork to Pylon ground fire and hitting Monolith 7, breaking it.

The Pariah of Phalanx 3 is a pariah no longer as it marshals out of the broken Monolith 6, securing the Ork Blitz, and repairing 1 Necron Lord with Warrior and another Warrior.

The Pylon sustains fire on the Gunzmob? and kills a Big Gun?

End of Turn:

Kult of Speed fails to rally.

Orks 2 (Blitz, BTS) vs Necrons 2 (Blitz, BTS)

Tiebreaker: Orks: 2542.5 vs Necrons 2512.5

An *excruciatingly* close game!

If the Fighta-Bommerz had failed to come in on Turn 4 (They needed a 4+), the Necrons would've won 3-2 over the Orks.

Even with the "extra points" for the Orks, this was razor thin... heck, might not even consider it a "loss"... *laugh*

I think it is a good indication that the removal of the auto-rally and the SC variable strategy rating have had a tremendous effect on the list.  

Now I am curious how the Necron will work with the Destroyers in a list.  My guess is the games will go hands down to the Necron player.

Really?

Six-strong units seem to die like flies... they can't sustain coming out of a Portal... and most infantry is in cover... and overwatch MW templates are a Necron's worst nightmare!  *laugh*

I'll have to consider the next iteration of my Necron list... I *do* like having all those Monoliths... but it lacks... zazz.

They have 12 shots at AP4+/AT6+ that brutalizes infantry formations.  Their problem is in their offensive capabilities, not the defensive ones.  On top of that they can comes out of portals, move very quickly, and act as 'herders' for the Necrons.  By themselves they are tough, but when you combine them with the typical Necron attack (turn 1 or 2 teleport into the enemy's hot zone) they are difficult to reach.  You have your choice of going after an enemy that is on the distant horizon or one that is on your doorstep.  Most people will (and should) focus on the Monoliths and the formations coming out of the monoliths (aka Phalanx).  It is a piece of cake to just tie up your opponents line with your tpyical slower moving formations while slamming them with the Destroyers.  I won't regurgiate my earlier analysis of the Destoyers.  It is there for anyone to read on the 4.3 thread.  Anyone is more than welcome to crunch it a different way but as it looks now they are underpriced by a LOT or just overpowered.
