I don't about other parts of the world, but I can think of about a half dozen hobby stores that have closed in Connecticut.

If any hobby stores close here, we'll soon be having the first anti-hobby store, or whatever it is you get when you have less than zero stores. 3 survivors, so far....
To be fair, 3 out of 6 - there never were that many.

As regards GW - Apo is a step further away from the hearts of gaming hobbyists as opposed to the wanna-baneblade-one-year-five-month fad gamers (Waboyfmofad gamers, or Wabfads for short). The 12 inch starter is not my cup of coffee. Apocalypse, the stores, the product format and WD have all swerved towards catering for the wabfads rather than the growvs (grumpy old wargaming veterans). Assuming there are three populations - wabfads, growves, and people who don't give a second hand jellybaby for wargames, only two of these can contribute $ to the cause. GW chose the wabfads, also hoping to attract nonjellybabists to the cause. Did it work? To some extent. But it seems that the policy is running the company rather than the other way round, and given a trend for less free time and less patience to push models around (let alone paint them! - and - assembly? things have to be BUILT???), the wabfad source might not be able to support monsters the size of GW - not enough sould for the Emperor's throne; the nonjellybabists would become tougher to draw in, and we old growvs have been cheesed off. Was it possible for GW to support both factions? Probably not, but at some point it I'd say the potential revenue from growves will outweigh that from the wabfads; at which point it will be too late for GW to turn back.
I only hope that there are enough wabfads who survive  maturity to become growves in the end - the existence of the hobby, as distinct as possible from marketing definitions of wargaming and modelling, will depend on them.

Ok, I'm only an enginseer without the first coffee of the day, please keep that in mind
:p  :p  :p

Hmmm ... I guess ... I'd be surprised if they declared a profit ...  I wonder how long they can go on like this ?

Hi!

I went to their investor webpage and its VERY interesting to see how they have been doing over the last several years. Their gross revenues over the last 3 years are down over 40 million pounds! Other things like net profit and cost aren't looking too good either. All the while they have been increasing prices. So basically their price hikes have kept bad posting from being terrible ones.

If the latest Armageddon game does not "do it" for them. I think they are in trouble. Three years or more of declining revenues and/or profits is bad not matter what spin they may desire to place on it.

OF course it would be an entirely separate thread to speculate what they will do to reverse these trends.....

Apocalypse has been selling like crazy, whilst forgeworld are backed up several weeks due to all the Titans people have been buying from them...

Whether those sales outweigh the investment in seven new sprues for the baneblade, and price cuts due to multi-packs, I don't know.

A wargaming world without the powerhouse GW...I wonder what that would be like?

Does that make moe room for smaller enterprises o get a share of the maret with a better chance to bloom? Or does that mean lesss overall recruiting to the cause and a general decline overall?

I think this is a suitable emoticon regarding these GW reports,

it is called 'the Blob'. Can you add this to the list Cybershadow?

Hi!

I don't know whether it would be good or bad for GW not to exist, but from my point of view, I think we the consumer would benefit from several companies taking "chunks" of their IP for individual development.

At least epic would have a chance this way.

An ideal world would be for it to go 'open'. I.e. some nut buy it and allow anyone to do anything with it. Never happen though :)

Like I said, who needs G/W !? ??? Let the new blood, like DRM and E/W, replace the 6mm Sci-fi market !  Which they are doing anyway !   Who can afford a Tank Co. in 40k Scale, anyway !

This is the part that made me howl personally

We forgot that we are a company which pursues profit and likes paying surplus cash to its owners. What was not expected was that it would take two poor years and a management reorganisation to get the problems taken seriously

If this is what they call seriously I'd hate to see what they think qualifies as a lark.

The LotR licence I believe expires in 2010... I suspect they end up filing for the UK equivalent of protection from creditors in 2011. Until that contract expires they're legally *required* to keep hemorrhaging money on it.

There's still a market for GW figs but they may have to return to their roots to find it. And I doubt the current crop of loons in charge will be the people to realize that.

A world without GW... it would be like a world in which all the major powers (USA, GB, France, Russia, China and so on) got kicked out of the sky. Who knows what could happen?

Anyway, i i think that if GW were to fall their IP will never ever be sold, so the warhammer world would suddenly cease to exist. Maybe it will open up the market for some other, interesting fantasy worlds/games though...

We've had what... 4 years worth of reports saying they have declining revenue now and no visible attempt to correct any of the issues causing it other than them admitting they're "fat and lazy"?

If Primarch's figures are accurate on the amount they've lost... and I have no doubt they are... any other company I've worked for would have executed their management "pour encourager l'autres".

Doomed seems to sum it up... which is unfortunate as I'm sure the spill over effects on a re-org would have vast, far reaching consequences for a hobby that's by and large a marginal endeavor at the retail level.

I don't see why it should have any less of an effect than the CCG die off in the mid-90s did on the retailers. It drove a lot of poorly run stores out of the business.

Several of the gaming stores around here that stock GW seem to be reducing their "footprint" and inceasing the wall space for other miniature games.

Warmachine, Flames or War, and Battlefield: Evolution all seem to be getting bigger bites of the "miniature gaming" pie.
