Three imperfect casts made. Worst half of mold re-poured. Three casts primed white.

if you still have issues in casting , bring it back and I will make you a quick mold and cast you up a few.

Thanks, I appreciate the offer. I can probably get it done, but it's good to have you in reserve (so to speak).

Once I get a good two-piece mold going, I will try that neat dixie-cup technique.

My mind is already buzzing with possibilities on how to modify the castings - fatter central section for keel gun, different doo-dads on the fins, the circular 'windows' and so forth. Such fun!

The redone master mold is good. I noticed that gravity feed is not getting resin into the tiny engines at the bottom, so I'm going to use the two-cast technique where I poke resin into the fine detail using a toothpick, let that set, then do the main pour.

Okay, Otter, I'm intrigued; what's the dixie-cup technique?

And when do we get to see the casts?

regards,
Reaver

Ah, that ship would be a great addition to any RT fleet...

Hope you get lucky and your next mold gets to be perfect.

I will probably take pictures on Friday or Saturday. I basecoated the three imperfect first casts and stuck them on flying bases. Bella saw them last night. "Oooh, pretty!" she said.

Here's a little illustration I put together while waiting for my code to compile and download

Acquire as small of a disposable cup as possible
Insert a pin or wire into the model through the bottom of the cup. This will secure the model in place during the pour, and allow for an air flow out during the resin pour
Optionally, place some sort of conduit from the bottom of the model that runs to the bottom of the cup. This could be aluminum wire, bent plastic tubing, whatever. It must be able to stand on its own
Mark on both sides of the cup where the midline of the model is.
Fill the cup with silicon, let harden
Using the marks on the cup, make initial cuts into the silicon along the midline.
Remove the cup. Invert the mold. Continue cutting through the silicon until the model is reached. Don't cut the model. Don't cut throughout the length of the cup. Only cut halfway from top to bottom
Remove the original model
Cut a well hole in the top of the mold (which was once the bottom of the cup). Pour the resin in here, let harden.
Pull open the mold along the half-way cut, and extract the copy.

Advantages:
1) Only one pour necessary, reducing molding time to half.
2) Mold lines will only exist on part of the mold. Since the clay stage was skipped as in a two-part mold, the existing mold lines will only be as wide as the knife blade used to make the cut.
3) Flashing will be negligible, since the one-piece mold holds itself together, preventing leakage from the cavity.

Disadvantages:
1) Cutting of the midline will be done 'blind' for opaque silicon.
2) Amount of silicon used is dictated by cup, and might be prohibitive for small models.
3) Some model shapes cannot be molded this way, due to the final extraction step. Example: a torus.

Thanks, O-man! I'll have to give that a try...
Only possible problem - would the mold not start to tear after you'd opened it a couple of times? I guess there's only one way to find out...
Regards,
Reaver

Yep, Chris mentioned that it's not as sturdy as a 2-part production mold.

The no-mold-lines-on-part-of-the-copy has me intrigued enough to try it.

Very minor progress here. A little bit of putty work, and an experiment with a scriber and etched brass template that didn't work out so well, and then putty work to offset that. Reprimed the modified hull gray, because it's easier for me to work with than pure resin white.

Chris Lynch of Ravenstar told me about a local silicon dealer, so I may pick up some stuff from him this week.

Almost no progress.

Last night I did have a dream that I was sculpting on this ship. Such a thing is very unusual, because I almost never dream about miniatures. They're mostly anxiety or sex dreams. But, you probably figured that already.

I made it to GT Products, but it was near closing so no tour was available. The silicon has been working well, but the resin has proven to be too weak for my purposes.

Wow, that's no good. I remember a time when i had such dreams(frustration ones) almost every night, making them persitent nightmares so intense, that several times i woke up when i noticed i had been punching the nearby wall in real life, or after hearing my own scream (how can someone scream while he is slipping???). Do you have anything about your life you would really like to change?

By the way, keep up the good work. Hope you have someone to play with
