Saw this on Digg just now and though I would make those dedicated scratchbuilders and casters out there drool.  Big cutting machines.  3d Printer. All for a day price of $30.  Pity you have to be in California to go there.  Still what a cool idea.

Edit- no idea where I got the san francisco line from...

Holy wow.

If only I knew someone in the area... I'm quite good at 3d design!

If you like that place you should live in Dayton, Ohio, USA.  There are machine shops all over the city that would put that place to shame.  Granted, they are private businesses that are there to make industrial prototypes and small lot manufacturing and not for hobbyists.

At my work I was a supervisor in a "model shop" that was a giant version of that place and made prototype parts and tooling for the brakes product engineering departments.  It was closed down due to being horribly inefficient (United Auto Workers unionized labor will do that to a place).  After that and a short stint fabricating hose for brake hose assemblies I was put back into prototypes where I was going to different machine shops around the area getting prototype parts made or modified.  Go to one place to get something laser cut, go to another to get parts water-jet cut, three different places for basic machining, another place for stereo lithography and other resin prototypes.

I found it kind of funny that the blog entry got excited about cutting that logo.  I've seen so many automotive, defense and NASA projects that makes that look like childs play.  The most interesting was seeing the fixture that will hold the sensor for the new Webb Space Telescope made out of Molybdenum.

Still, though, it is neat to see a place like that open up.

And that's the point: the concept is great. I've seen a plasma cutter used in different places, and as you say, Blarg, it's nothjing to write home about - our own laser at work can do it easily and on a wider range of materials. But it IS nice to have that stuff easily available - granted, for a fee, but fair's fair.

And - oh wow, you worked on Moly? For the Webb ST?!? Now I REALLY am impressed - and envious :) :) :)

Pfah, that's nothing. When I was in college we worked on metals whose electron bonds were enhanced by an external power supply.

Now we build our safes out of artificial matter. None of that supernova-forged crap for us!
