Hi all. This board exists to provide information about the Community Sector of the site, WikiWikiWar. Any comments on the Wiki, registration or other features can be posted here. In addition, I will keep you updated with what is currently available, and any tips on using the features.

Firstly, a bit of background. I have been looking for a way to extend and strengthen the excellent community that we have here. Recently, there have been calls for the addition of a Wiki. Rather than limit it to this one feature, I thought that I would take the opportunity to add other aspects that I thought people would find interesting and useful.

I have taken the unusual step of installing this system as a sub-section of the web site as a whole, which I have called the Community Sector. The reason for this is that I feel that there is still a place for traditional web site material - pages that do not change so often, which are organised according to a plan or map, and people can link to easily from outside.

Firstly, the bad news. This Community Sector requires you to make a second registration, and will not work simply with your login username and password from these boards. While the software does have a forum included, it is not as good as here. I thought about this a lot, but since I would be asking you to register on the new application anyway, I have decided to keep the two areas relatively seperated. However, this does mean that I advise you strongly to register over in the new sector as quickly as possible. Substantial delays could lead to another member taking your forum username. While there is no strict rule that your new username should be the same as your login here, it will probably make things easier if it is. Therefore, please dont deliberately take another members login name.

The new sector comes with a fair number of features. Initially, these will all be turned off. I would like people to get used to using the basic functions first, and add new features gradually.

As I add new functions, I will update this post to let you know that they are now 'live', and include any guidance that I can in using them.

Thanks for all of your continued support of the site. I hope that this new software allows me to make it a better, more interesting, and more useful place on the web to spend time.

The first function activated is the wiki. This should be fairly obvious on its use. Feel free to ask any questions that you come up with.

One tip - the wiki does not allow the creation of blank pages, since this could leads to hundreds of empty pages with no title, text or reference. Therefore, pages are created by links in previous pages. If you want to create a new page which does not exist, you should include double brackets around the phrase or word. For example: 'Over on the ((Tactical Command)) forum'. This will create a link. However, since the link currently doesnt go anywhere, a question mark will automatically be inserted in the page after the phrase. Click on this question mark and you will be taken to the new 'Tactical Command' page, which you can then edit away. If you create this link by use of the double brackets, and the page title does exist, a link will automatically be placed in the text.

Finally, if you want to create a new page that is not currently linked to any existing page, you should just edit a page that exists. It doesnt matter which page you select, just edit one, add your expression or phrase, for example ((Tactical Command)), and click 'preview' only. This displays how the page would look, but does not save the page. Therefore, the usual question mark should appear after the phrase, and you can click on this to be taken away to the Tactical Command page and your original page will go back to how it was before, unaltered by your edit.

In addition, you are able to export wiki pages to PDF documents.

I hope that this clears up the major issues. Let me know if there are further questions.

Each user gets a number of features, accessed through the 'My Tiki' link.

Each user can set up their home page. Feel free to use this to show of your best mini, or give general news.

You are also able to send other users messages, in the same way as the PM system here.

You also have your own task list, allowing you to compile lists of things to do, or assign it to another member (I can see a long list of tasks assigned to me!). ?:D

There is also space to store bookmarks (web addresses), organised in folders, write notes or watch pages.

Update: Home pages can only be edited by their owner.

Update: I have also allowed uploading of files to your personal area there.

Image Galleries

Galleries to store pictures have now been added. Users can create their own galleries, set a directory structure and determine whether they are for private or public uploading of images. I would recommend that galleries are kept private unless there is a reason to make them public for uploading.

This should allow users to store their latest work, for free. However, I would ask that members keep pictures wargame related... and certainly clean (looking at you, here, netepic!). ?:cool:

In general, if a picture is related to a post or thread here, and will not be needed outside that post, it is best to upload the picture to these boards. In other occasions, where a picture can be viewed without the context of a thread here, the image galleries on WikiWikiWar could be used.

Update: I have now changed the permissions on the image galleries, allowing anyone to view galleries or pictures (but not upload images). This means that the RSS feed on the galleries should now work without any problems, and allows those members who would like to use this area to store pictures and link them into posts on other forums to do so.

Blogs

Just added - Members may now create and run their own blogs. For those unfamiliar, these allow an interactive diary (literally: web log). I hope that this will be a useful feature of the new sections, and that we can get people with painting diaries, etc.

Current permissions allow these blogs to be viewed from outside the system, so you wont need to log in to catch up, and again RSS should be enabled. However, to post, you will need to log in.

As a trial, I have activated the chat room. This allows members to log in, and visit one of the rooms set up, to talk to other members in the room. Currently, there is only one room set up, but I am happy to set up other rooms with themes if/when they are required.

I will keep an eye on how useful this feature is, and whether it slows things down, so please let me know how useful this is.

File Galleries

I had a few requests to allow the uploading and storage of various files. This has now been added. You will need to be registered to create a gallery and upload files to this area, but non-members are able to browse and download files. This means, for example, that you can upload files (such as the latest EA Force List) and then link to it for download in the wiki page.
